To Hong Kong and Back: Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic PHX-JFK-LHR in Economy

It began as a simple trip to Europe, but evolved into something completely different! Taking advantage of ultra-low fares in business class from Cairo, I booked a first and business class-only itinerary from Cairo to Hong Kong and back, stopping four nights along the way. Here is my story.

We booked round trip flights from Phoenix to London for just over $500 each way. That’s an absolute steal, and that’s in addition to the miles and points I earned. I only 1,420 Delta SkyMiles, and 194 SPG points through SPG Crossovers for my flights, which I value at $18.59 and $3.88, respectively.

Unfortunately, this would mean we would be in the back for our journey. Delta’s terminal in Phoenix is still undergoing renovations, but the check-in area is complete and looking nice.

There’s no lounge at all in Terminal 3 of PHX currently, so we were stuck in the terminal until our flight arrived. Luckily, due to my “status” from being an SPG Platinum member on Delta, I received a free upgrade to Delta Comfort+, which gave me more leg room, free drinks, and premium snacks on the flight to New York. Overall, I can’t complain (especially when Delta serves Woodford Reserve bourbon on board).

There were great views of Manhattan on our final approach.

We arrived at JFK with less than one hour until our international flight, in a different terminal. So, we hopped on a bus quickly and made our way over, where boarding was just about to begin. We would be flying Delta’s partner Virgin Atlantic for this leg of our journey.

Once on board, we found our seats in the back. This plane offers 2-4-2 seating, which isn’t too bad for a flight of this distance. Since I was traveling with someone, the two-seater was a no-brainer.

Virgin Atlantic also gave us a small amenity kit, with socks, earplugs, a toothbrush, and a pen. Not bad for economy!

We were on our way soon after. Since it was dinner time, meals were served shortly after takeoff. Wine, beer, and spirits are complimentary on Virgin Atlantic, and I can say the wine was completely serviceable. Champagne is an extra charge. They even passed out menus, which is an excellent addition.

I had the Chicken Teriyaki for my meal. It was fine, and the rice and veggies definitely filled me up. The red velvet cake for dessert was the perfect amount, too.

After dinner, flight attendants came around a few more times with water and would get you other drinks if you asked. I watched a movie on their in-flight entertainment system. The screens weren’t high-definition like on my Delta domestic flight, and there weren’t a large amount of movies to choose from on my flight, but it was good enough for the short hop to London.

About an hour before landing, a breakfast was served.

Again, perfectly fine for economy, and I was impressed with how much we actually did get in economy. Bravo, Virgin Atlantic!

We arrived in London relatively on-time, and was able to transit security and customs quickly, to spend the day in London before switching airports to Stansted for our RyanAir flight.
