Booking Aulani: Understanding DVC and How to Save
Aulani at sunset
Aulani is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resort at its core, though regular hotel guests can book rooms with cash. But here’s the insider trick: you can often save 30–50% off standard rates by renting DVC points from owners. These points are used by timeshare members to book accommodations at Disney resorts, and many choose to rent them out when they won’t be using them.
Several reputable sites like David’s Vacation Club Rentals or DVC Rental Store connect travelers with DVC members. You’ll pay a fixed price per point, depending on season and room type, and in return, you’ll get access to all the accomodations at Aulani like deluxe studios, one-bedroom suites, or multi-room villas.
Do note that these bookings typically require payment up front, so it’s best for those with firm travel dates. But if you’re flexible and can book early, this is easily one of the best ways to experience Aulani for less.
Resort Location and Layout
Aulani is nestled in the Ko Olina resort community, a beautifully manicured, master-planned development about 30 minutes from Honolulu and Waikiki. The resort overlooks one of Ko Olina’s four manmade lagoons, offering calm and shallow waters that are perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply lounging on the beach. Aulani shares this tranquil stretch of coastline with the Four Seasons Oahu and Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club, and a public walking path makes it easy to explore the entire area on foot.
Despite its proximity to other properties, Aulani feels distinct. From the moment you step into the open-air lobby, with its high vaulted ceilings, Hawaiian artwork, and sweeping ocean views, you’re immersed in a world that celebrates local culture while still sprinkling in just enough Disney whimsy.
Pools, Slides, and Relaxation
Water is a central theme at Aulani, and the resort boasts one of the most impressive pool complexes in all of Hawaii. The main Waikolohe Pool features a massive zero-entry area that’s ideal for families, while the surrounding lazy river—Waikolohe Stream—winds through lush tropical landscaping and even passes under bridges and rockwork.
There are two water slides: one is a body slide built into the resort’s faux mountain, and the other is a gentler inner tube slide that can be enjoyed solo or with a partner. For quieter moments, Ka Maka Grotto offers an infinity-edge pool that overlooks the ocean, and it becomes especially magical at night with fiber-optic stars overhead.
Younger kids can enjoy the splash zones and Menehune Bridge, a water play structure with smaller slides and interactive elements (though it was under refurbishment during our stay). Meanwhile, Rainbow Reef offers a saltwater snorkeling experience—an extra charge, but a great option for guests who aren’t comfortable with open-ocean snorkeling.
Dining Around the Resort
Dining at Aulani is as varied as it is scenic. While prices lean toward the higher end—as you’d expect at a Disney resort in Hawaii—the quality and theming elevate the experience. We especially enjoyed dinner at the ‘Ōlelo Room, where I had one of the best poke bowls of the entire trip. The sushi was fresh, the cocktails creative, and the outdoor ambiance unmatched.
For more casual fare, Ulu Café is a great spot to grab breakfast, snacks, or drinks on the go. Off the Hook serves classic American poolside fare, and Makahiki offers character breakfasts and a Hawaiian-inspired prix fixe dinner. ‘AMA‘AMA, the resort’s signature fine dining restaurant, was closed for a reimagining during our stay but has since reopened with a revamped concept and menu.
If you’re staying in a villa, another great way to save money is by cooking in your full kitchen. There are grocery stores nearby in Kapolei, making it easy to stock up on essentials or even prep full meals.
Disney Magic, Hawaiian Culture
Though there’s no castle or fireworks show, Aulani still brings the magic with thoughtful, family-friendly experiences. Characters like Mickey, Minnie, and Stitch make appearances around the resort, and PhotoPass photographers are stationed at various scenic locations. Cultural programming is equally emphasized—there are hula lessons, storytelling sessions, lei-making workshops, and even an interactive iPad scavenger hunt called the Menehune Adventure Trail.
Auntie’s Beach House is a complimentary kids club where children can participate in crafts, games, and supervised activities, while adults can retreat to the Laniwai Spa for some well-deserved pampering. The on-site gym, Mikimiki Fitness Center, is spacious and includes classes like yoga on the beach.
If you’re interested in a Hawaiian luau but don’t want to leave the resort, Disney offers its own version—KA WA‘A Luau—which includes food, live music, fire dancers, and storytelling. While it’s not the cheapest option on the island, it’s a fun and convenient introduction to local traditions with a Disney flair.
Inside the Three-Bedroom Villa
Our three-bedroom villa at Aulani was an absolute showstopper. With ample room for extended family or larger groups, it featured a full kitchen with high-end appliances, three full bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and a spacious lanai with panoramic views of the pool and ocean. The layout allowed for multiple entrances and flexible configurations, which is especially helpful for multi-generational travel.
It felt less like a hotel room and more like a luxurious vacation home—with the added bonus of Disney details and resort service. If you can rent DVC points or book far enough ahead, these villas are worth every penny.
Final Thoughts: Is Aulani Worth It?
Aulani offers a truly unique Disney experience, one that doesn’t rely on theme park rides but instead blends thoughtful cultural storytelling, family-friendly fun, and Hawaiian hospitality. It’s beautifully designed, loaded with amenities, and packed with opportunities for both adventure and relaxation.
While it’s certainly a splurge, renting DVC points is a fantastic way to cut costs without sacrificing the experience. I’d recommend Aulani for families looking to stay put for a few days and soak in the surroundings—especially as part of a longer Hawaiian trip. Three or four nights feels like the sweet spot before venturing to explore more of Oʻahu or another island.
If you’re seeking a resort that delivers both Disney-level polish and authentic Hawaiian atmosphere, Aulani absolutely delivers.
