Carnival Rewards Is Live: 12 Things Every Cruiser Needs To Know
Updated September 1, 2026. Carnival Rewards is a new program and some details are still being clarified. I will update this post as Carnival publishes more.
The Carnival VIFP Club retired on August 31, 2026, after fourteen years, and Carnival Rewards took its place on September 1. If you have watched my Carnival ship tours on the Jackson Jetsetting YouTube channel, you know I try to explain loyalty programs the way I explain them to my own clients: what it costs, what you get, and whether it is worth chasing. This post does that for Carnival Rewards.
The short version is that Carnival moved from a program that rewarded nights at sea to a program that rewards dollars spent. The four tier colors survive. The math underneath them is entirely new. Below are the twelve things I am walking every Carnival client through this week, including the real-dollar cost of each tier, the benefits that changed, and the one step legacy members had to take to keep their status.

1. The Carnival VIFP Club ended on August 31, 2026
VIFP launched in 2012 and every tier was based on time at sea. Blue covered your first cruise, Red ran from your second cruise through 24 points, Gold started at 25, Platinum at 75, and Diamond at 200 nights. Under Carnival Rewards, nights no longer determine status.
Existing VIFP members had to opt in at CarnivalRewards.com by August 31 for their Red, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond status to transfer. If you enrolled, your status is protected through December 31, 2028. If you did not enroll and you believe you should have status, contact Carnival directly and ask about your account before you assume it is gone.
Pro Tip: Check every adult in your travel party separately. Enrollment is per account, and it is easy for one spouse to enroll while the other assumes it was handled.
2. Carnival Rewards Points and Status Qualifying Stars do different jobs
Most of the confusion I am hearing comes from treating Points and Stars as the same thing. They are two currencies with two purposes.
Carnival Rewards Points are spendable. You earn three Points per dollar on eligible Carnival purchases, including gratuities, and you redeem them toward future cruises, shore excursions, specialty dining, and spa treatments. Carnival values Points at roughly one cent each, so 10,000 Points is about $100 of value. Points post about fourteen days after your sailing ends and can be redeemed as soon as they appear.
Status Qualifying Stars decide your tier. You earn three Stars per dollar on the same eligible spend, plus one Star for every casino point you earn, even if you already redeemed those casino points onboard for FunPlay. Stars are never spent on anything.
From a points-and-miles perspective, three Points per dollar at one cent each is a three percent return on cruise spending, and it stacks on top of whatever credit card you pay with. VIFP never paid you anything on a per-dollar basis. On that one dimension, Carnival Rewards is a clear improvement.
3. Carnival Rewards Red is the new entry tier
Blue is gone. Everyone who enrolls, including a first-time cruiser, starts at Red. Red members earn and redeem Points, receive members-only offers, and get a 1.5 liter bottle of water in the stateroom.
4. Carnival Rewards Gold requires 10,000 Stars
At three Stars per dollar, 10,000 Stars equals about $3,333 in eligible Carnival spending. A couple on a seven-night balcony sailing with a drinks package and a couple of excursions can reach Gold on a single cruise.
Gold adds a dedicated support line and one complimentary beverage on cruises of five days or longer, on top of the Red benefits. Under VIFP, Gold took 25 nights. For newer cruisers, the new threshold is far easier to reach.
5. Carnival Rewards Platinum requires 50,000 Stars
Platinum requires 50,000 Stars, or about $16,667 in eligible spending within a qualifying window if you have no casino play and no Carnival Rewards Mastercard. Platinum is the tier at the center of the year-long debate over this program, so it is worth being precise about what Platinum members receive.
Platinum keeps priority check-in, priority embarkation, and priority debarkation. That benefit was widely rumored to be cut, and it was not. Platinum also includes early online check-in sixteen days before sailing, priority access at guest services, the spa, and specialty restaurants, preferred main dining and specialty dining times, two complimentary beverages, a collectible pin, and complimentary wash-and-fold laundry.
Laundry is where Carnival trimmed:

If you reached Platinum under VIFP by sailing short, inexpensive itineraries, spending roughly $16,667 every two years is a very different commitment than 75 lifetime nights. Casino play and the Mastercard both shorten the path, and I cover the card in point nine.

6. Carnival Rewards Diamond requires 100,000 Stars, and legacy Diamond is lifetime
Diamond requires 100,000 Stars, or about $33,333 in eligible spending per qualifying window. Members who held VIFP Diamond by August 31, 2026 and enrolled in Carnival Rewards are Diamond for life with no requalification.
Diamond includes everything in Platinum plus a dedicated Diamond support number, guaranteed main dining time, retail and onboard concierge services, dedicated casino host access, and a special event with the captain. The combined Platinum and Diamond party is gone, but a Diamond event remains.
Diamond laundry moves from unlimited under VIFP to a set allowance:

7. Carnival Rewards status expires on a two-year cycle
Status is earned during a two-year Status Qualifying Window and enjoyed for the remainder of that window plus the following two-year window. The inaugural qualifying window is longer than usual: it runs from September 1, 2026 through December 31, 2028. Stars you earn in that window set your tier for 2029 and 2030.
Whatever VIFP status you carried into the program is protected through December 31, 2028. After that, everyone except legacy Diamond members requalifies every two years. Platinum members can no longer say they are Platinum forever.
8. Legacy Platinum members receive a 10,000 Star boost each cycle
If you earned VIFP Platinum by August 31, 2026, Carnival deposits 10,000 Status Qualifying Stars into your account at the start of every qualifying period. Since 10,000 Stars is the Gold threshold, a legacy Platinum member can never fall below Gold, and each window begins twenty percent of the way back to Platinum. Holding Platinum in a given cycle then requires 40,000 additional Stars, or about $13,333 in eligible spend.
Some cruisers consider that a fair landing. Others feel it undervalues a hundred or more nights of loyalty. Both reactions are reasonable.
9. The Carnival Rewards Mastercard is the fastest path to status
Carnival published the full earning structure for the Carnival Rewards Mastercard with the launch, and it is more generous than most co-branded travel cards I write about.

There is no annual fee, and Carnival is running a limited-time welcome offer of up to 50,000 bonus Points, worth roughly $500 toward a future cruise.
At one cent per Point, 6x on Carnival spend is a six percent return on your fare, drinks package, excursions, and gratuities. On the status side, a household that puts $2,000 a month of groceries, dining, and everyday bills on the card earns 24,000 Stars per year from everyday spend alone. Over a two-year window that is 48,000 Stars before booking a single cruise, and one seven-night sailing carries that household to Platinum.
Whether the card belongs in your wallet depends on your credit profile, your other cards, and how often you sail. If you cruise Carnival twice a year or more, the card is the difference between requalifying with room to spare and falling short.
Pro Tip: Everyday-spend Stars only help you if you enroll in Carnival Rewards and link the card to the same account. Confirm the loyalty number on your card application matches the one on your cruise bookings.
10. Kids keep their VIFP status and parents earn credit for family spend
Children under 18 cannot enroll in Carnival Rewards on their own. Their existing VIFP status is preserved, and Carnival has said their prior cruise days will count when they turn 18 and enroll. Parents do not need to opt children in.
The money you spend on your children’s fares and onboard charges is credited to the adult account. Carnival has not yet published the exact mechanics, so expect more detail in the coming weeks. 11. Carnival Rewards milestones now count days sailed
The VIFP milestone program celebrated your 25th, 50th, 75th, and 100th cruise. The new Milestone Recognition Program counts days sailed, so most guests reach recognition sooner.

Carnival has not confirmed in writing whether a milestone crossed before September 1 pays out retroactively. My read is that milestones trigger going forward, so if you crossed 100 days in August, plan on your next recognition at 200 days. I will update this section if Carnival clarifies.
12. The new Carnival Sail & Sign card displays days sailed
Starting September 1, the Sail & Sign card switches to a vertical layout that hangs properly on a lanyard. It keeps the Red, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond colors, retains your muster station, dining time, and table assignment, and adds a circular emblem in the lower right corner showing your total days sailed with Carnival.
Five Things I Am Telling Every Carnival Client This Week
Confirm your status transferred. Log in at CarnivalRewards.com and verify your tier shows correctly. Do the same for your spouse and any regular travel companions.
Track eligible spend by qualifying window, not by cruise. Your tier for 2029 and 2030 depends on Stars earned between September 1, 2026 and December 31, 2028. Keep a running total.
Prepay gratuities and buy packages through Carnival. Gratuities and prepaid packages count as eligible spend for both Points and Stars. Third-party excursions and airfare do not.
Decide on the Mastercard early in the window. Everyday-spend Stars accumulate slowly, so a card opened in month one of the window does far more for your status than one opened in month twenty.
Redeem Points instead of hoarding them. At roughly one cent each, Points do not gain value by sitting in your account. Apply them to your next booking as soon as they post.
Is Carnival Rewards better or worse than the VIFP Club?
It depends on how you cruise. Newer cruisers and higher-spending cruisers come out ahead: Gold is reachable in a single sailing, every dollar earns Points, and the Mastercard turns grocery runs into status. Long-tenured Platinum members who reached the tier on short, budget-friendly sailings come out behind, and the reduced laundry allowance stings for Platinum and Diamond alike.
