Celebrity Cruises has raised its daily automatic gratuities, effective July 29, 2026. It is a $1.50 per person, per day increase across every cabin category. That is a small number, but adds up as you add people in your cabin and days to your next cruise.

The New Celebrity Gratuity Rates
All figures are per person, per night, and they apply to every guest in the cabin, including the third and fourth berth. The charge posts to your onboard account daily.
What It Actually Adds to Your Cruise
Per person per day, $1.50 barely registers. Across a booking, the effects multiply. For two adults on a 7-night sailing:
Veranda: $252 before, $273 now — up $21.
Concierge or AquaClass: $266 before, $287 now — up $21.
The Retreat: $322 before, $343 now — up $21.
On a 10-night sailing in a veranda, two adults now pay $390 in daily gratuities. That is real money, and it is the part of a cruise budget people most often forget to plan for. Can You Still Lock In the Old Rate?
This is where most of the frustration came from. Celebrity told already-booked guests they were welcome to prepay at the old rate before their sailing, in their press release. The notice and the effective date landed close enough together that a lot of people never had a practical window to act.
Where that leaves you now:
If you prepaid before July 29, you are locked at the old rate for that sailing, no matter when you pay.
If you did not, the new rate applies.
Prepaying still has value going forward, because it protects you against the next increase and takes the charge off your onboard bill. It is the single easiest thing to do the day you book.
How Celebrity Compares to the Other Lines
Celebrity now sits at the higher end of the mainstream and premium field, though not at the top of it.
Two things worth noting. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity's corporate sibling, has not moved its rates since October 2024, so Celebrity has now pulled a dollar ahead of it. And a few lines sidestep the question entirely by folding gratuities into the fare, which is how Virgin Voyages handles tips for some fare classes.
What Did Not Change
The daily charge is only one of the two gratuity systems on a Celebrity ship. The other one is untouched: beverages, beverage packages, specialty dining, and spa or salon services still carry an automatic percentage on top of the listed price. That is why a $14 cocktail lands closer to $17 on your account. If you sail on an Always Included fare with a drink package built in, that percentage is already baked in. The Reaction, and What I Think of It
The response from cruisers is split. One camp pointed out that $1.50 a day is less than a soda and not worth a fuss. The other camp was less bothered by the amount than by the pattern: gratuities have climbed steadily for years, they now sit on top of a fare that has also climbed, and each increase makes the "included" language on a cruise fare feel a little thinner.
A recurring worry in that second camp is that every increase pushes a few more people to go to guest services and remove the automatic gratuity altogether, which ultimately could hurt the crew.
My own read, as someone who books these cruises for a living: the increase itself is unremarkable, and it tracks what every line has been doing. The rollout is the part worth criticizing.
If you are booked on Celebrity for later this year or next, the practical takeaway is to prepay your gratuities at booking from here on out. It costs nothing extra, it fixes the rate, and it means the next announcement is not your problem. And, if you have a Royal Caribbean sailing coming up, I’d recommend pre-paying those gratuities now.
