MSC Opens Catalina Sugar Beach in November 2026
MSC Cruises has released the details on Catalina Sugar Beach, a rebuilt beach destination on Catalina Island off La Romana in the Dominican Republic. It opens in November 2026. MSC Opera will call on every sailing once the ship starts its year-round season out of La Romana, and Explora Journeys will visit on select Caribbean voyages.
The arrangement differs from Ocean Cay. MSC developed the Bahamas property on its own. On Catalina, CTL Maritime, part of the MSC Group, has gone in 50/50 with Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, which has managed the island for more than 25 years. Casa de Campo belongs to Central Romana Corporation, the sugar producer the town is effectively built around. Other cruise lines keep their access, Casa de Campo resort guests keep theirs, and MSC gets the beach to itself only while one of its ships is anchored offshore.
What MSC is building at Catalina Sugar Beach
The centerpiece is an open-air beach pavilion serving a buffet of international and Dominican food, with a shaded dining area facing the water. There will be two bars, one of them a palapa under a thatched roof, and a water sports center renting equipment with access to the reef. Cabanas and daybeds go along the sand for rent. MSC is also rebuilding the changing rooms, showers and restrooms, which on Catalina have been basic for years.
A walking path runs through the interior with signage about the plants and wildlife, finishing at an elevated clearing above the water. Until now the island has offered sand and very little else.
MSC has not released a cost, a capacity figure, or a completion date more specific than November.
Catalina Island, Dominican Republic
Catalina sits about a mile and a half off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, near La Romana. It measures roughly 4.5 kilometers by 3, and it has no permanent population.
Columbus landed in May 1494 and named it Santa Catalina. In 2007 a team from Indiana University identified a wreck lying in ten feet of water, 70 meters off the beach, as the Quedagh Merchant, the ship Captain William Kidd abandoned in 1699 before he sailed north, was arrested, and was shipped to London to hang in 1701. That wreck now sits inside a marine protected area, and the island itself holds Natural Monument status under Dominican law, which is why every MSC statement about the project mentions environmental compliance.
Costa Cruises already runs a private beach on Catalina under the name Serena Cay, on a different stretch of the same shoreline. By late 2026 two cruise lines will operate separate beach clubs on an island of under four square miles. I want to see a day when both have a ship anchored off.
How Catalina Sugar Beach compares to other new Caribbean private islands
Every major cruise line is building beach property right now, and the money involved has climbed fast over the last three years.
Carnival opened Celebration Key on Grand Bahama in July 2025 and finished a pier extension on June 29, 2026 that took the berths from two to four. Four ships can now tie up at once, which can put more than 13,000 passengers ashore in a single day. Carnival also rebuilt Half Moon Cay as RelaxAway, reopened in June 2026 with a 1,005-foot pier, an electric tram running five stops along the two-mile beach, and 22 cabanas, 48 day beds and 50 clam shells available to rent.
Royal Caribbean opened Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau in December 2025. It covers 17 acres, holds about 4,000 guests a day, and sells as a ticketed shore excursion rather than coming with your fare. Royal Caribbean owns 51 percent. The Bahamian government and Bahamian private investors were promised the other 49 through a public share offering, which has now slipped from 2024 to 2025 to 2026 and currently sits at the end of this year. A 42-acre Royal Beach Club Cozumel is targeting December 31, 2026 on the site of the old Playa Mia resort, also ticketed. Perfect Day Mexico at Mahahual follows in September 2027, with entry included in the fare.
Norwegian has put $150 million into Great Stirrup Cay for a pier that berths two large ships alongside, ending decades of tendering, and Great Tides Waterpark opens September 4, 2026 with 19 slides across almost six acres. Disney has run Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera since June 2024. MSC has had Ocean Cay since December 2019.
Set against all of that, Catalina Sugar Beach is a modest project. It has no waterpark and no deep-water pier, ships tender in rather than tie up alongside, and MSC holds the beach exclusively only for the hours one of its ships sits offshore. One 2,150-guest ship tenders in for the day. Carnival and Royal Caribbean are building for volume, while MSC has bought into a beach that already operates, and what a passenger gets out of the difference is a quieter day with fewer things on it.
MSC Opera: size, cabins and capacity
MSC Opera launched in 2004 and was cut in half and lengthened at Fincantieri's Palermo yard in 2015. She came out at 275 meters with 1,071 cabins, carrying 2,150 guests at double occupancy, 2,679 with every berth filled, and a crew of 728.
MSC Seascape and MSC Seashore both run past 4,500. Tendering 2,000 people ashore takes a fraction of the time, and that difference shows up in how long you wait for a chair and how far the buffet line stretches at noon. Opera is a 22-year-old ship with smaller cabins and no water park. Book her for the itinerary rather than the hardware.
MSC Opera itineraries from La Romana
First departure is November 16, 2026, seven nights round trip from La Romana. MSC says it is the first time the line has run year-round in the Southern Caribbean.
The port pool across the rotations covers Samaná Bay, Fort-de-France in Martinique, Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, Road Town and Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Bridgetown in Barbados, St. John's in Antigua, Willemstad in Curaçao, Kralendijk in Bonaire, Oranjestad in Aruba, St. George's in Grenada, Philipsburg in St. Maarten, Basseterre in St. Kitts, and Roseau in Dominica. Every week includes Catalina Sugar Beach.
Two weeks can be booked back to back as a 14-night sailing MSC calls a butterfly cruise, which covers two different sets of islands on one ship without repacking. For anyone flying in from the States, I would take the fourteen.
From April 2027 Fort-de-France becomes a second embarkation port for Opera. MSC Seaview homeports there for winter 2026/27 on its own seven-night runs to Guadeloupe, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Kitts, Dominica, Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada and St. Lucia.
Getting to La Romana: airports and transfers
La Romana has an airport, LRM, minutes from both the port and Casa de Campo. American, Air Canada, Condor and TUI all serve it, mostly on seasonal schedules, alongside heavy private aviation traffic for the resort. Availability moves around from year to year.
Most Americans will fly into Punta Cana, PUJ, and drive about 90 minutes west. Santo Domingo, SDQ, sits roughly an hour and a half in the other direction. Neither drive is complicated, neither is included in your cruise fare, and both go better arranged in advance than negotiated at the curb.

What MSC has not answered about Catalina Sugar Beach
Whether the buffet is included in your fare. Lunch on Ocean Cay is complimentary and most people are assuming the same arrangement will apply, but MSC has not confirmed it.
Whether drink packages work at the two bars. They do on Ocean Cay, exactly as they do onboard. No statement either way for Catalina.
What cabanas and daybeds cost. Confirmed as an extra charge, price unannounced.

Shore excursions from La Romana and Catalina Island
The snorkeling off Catalina is good. The reef sits close to shore, the water stays clear most of the year, and MSC is selling reef access as the reason for the new water sports center.
Altos de Chavón is a Mediterranean village built into a cliff above the Chavón River, commissioned in 1976 by Charles Bluhdorn of Gulf+Western, which at the time owned Paramount Pictures and the sugar operation in La Romana. Its 5,000-seat Roman amphitheater hosted the Concert for the Americas in August 1982, with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Heart and Santana on one bill. Julio Iglesias and the Pet Shop Boys have played it since.
Cueva de las Maravillas sits between La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís and holds 472 Taíno pictographs along with about ten petroglyphs. Roughly 200 meters of the cave is open on lit walkways, tours run an hour in small groups, and the site is better developed than most Caribbean caves.
Saona Island is the one on all the postcards, reached by catamaran, and it draws the biggest share of excursion bookings out of La Romana. It gets crowded. Worth doing once.
