MSC Poesia Sailing Canceled After Coast Guard Detains Ship in Miami

Guests boarded MSC Poesia at PortMiami on Sunday, November 1, 2026, expecting to sail on an 11-night Caribbean and Central America cruise. The ship never left the dock. After two days held in port during a U.S. Coast Guard inspection, MSC Cruises canceled the voyage on the morning of Tuesday, November 3.

I tour MSC ships on my YouTube channel and book MSC cruises for clients through my agency, so I wanted to lay out what happened to MSC Poesia, what passengers are being offered, and what the detention could mean if you have an upcoming MSC Poesia sailing.

What Happened to MSC Poesia at PortMiami

MSC Poesia was due to leave Miami at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Instead, the Coast Guard detained the ship for what a spokesperson described to the Miami New Times as an expanded examination, carried out to verify that the vessel complies with international standards and U.S. regulations. The Coast Guard said its priority is the safety of passengers, crew, the ship, and the environment.

Guests spent Sunday and Monday on board while the ship sat at its Miami terminal. On Monday evening, Captain Michele Tuvo told passengers that MSC was still hoping for clearance, and that a final decision would come by about 10 a.m. Tuesday. If the ship could not sail that day, the voyage would be canceled.

That is what happened. In a statement to NBC News, MSC said it had made the "difficult decision" to cancel the sailing. The cruise line explained that a regulatory matter came up before departure and could not be resolved in time for the cruise to go ahead.

As of Tuesday afternoon, neither the Coast Guard nor MSC has said what prompted the inspection or what inspectors found. Any explanation you see online beyond those official statements is speculation for now.

What MSC Cruises Is Offering Guests on MSC Poesia

MSC has confirmed a full refund of the cruise fare for everyone on the canceled sailing, along with support to help guests get home. Passengers can remain aboard MSC Poesia until noon on Thursday, November 5, which gives them time to rebook flights. Many guests on this sailing traveled from outside the United States, so that extra time is a big help.

During his onboard announcements, the captain also told guests to expect additional compensation, and several passengers have reported being promised a future cruise credit. MSC had not published the full details of that package as of Tuesday. Some passengers have also said publicly that they were frustrated by how little information they received during the two days in port.

Pro Tip: If you were on this sailing, keep every receipt for flights, hotels, transfers, and other travel you booked around the cruise. When MSC canceled an earlier MSC Poesia sailing in February 2026, guests received a full refund plus a future cruise credit worth 50 percent of their fare, and the line invited them to submit proof of purchase for related travel costs. There is no guarantee the same terms will apply this time, but having your paperwork organized puts you in the best position.

Why the Coast Guard Detains Cruise Ships in U.S. Ports

Every foreign-flagged cruise ship that sails from a U.S. port is subject to regular Coast Guard examinations, known as port state control. Inspectors check items like fire safety systems, lifeboats and other lifesaving equipment, pollution prevention, structural condition, and crew certification against international conventions and U.S. law.

Most examinations end with the ship sailing on schedule, sometimes with minor items to fix. A detention is a bigger step. It means the Coast Guard will not let the ship leave until the issues it found are corrected to its satisfaction. Detentions are uncommon compared with the thousands of examinations the Coast Guard performs each year, which is part of why this MSC Poesia story has drawn so much attention.

What the Detention Means for Upcoming MSC Poesia Cruises

MSC Poesia recently finished MSC Cruises’ first Alaska season from Seattle and repositioned to Miami for winter. The ship is set to sail 10- and 11-night Caribbean, Central America, and South America itineraries from PortMiami alongside MSC World America, MSC Meraviglia, and MSC Seaside. You can see where each line is placing its ships in my cruise ship deployments guide.

MSC has not said whether the next MSC Poesia departure will be affected. If you are booked on an upcoming sailing, watch your email and the MSC for Me app closely, and hold off on canceling yourself. When the cruise line cancels, you get your money back. When you cancel, standard penalties apply.

If you booked with me, I am already watching MSC Poesia closely and will reach out as soon as MSC shares anything about future departures. If you booked directly with MSC and want someone in your corner, reach out through my booking page and I can walk you through your options.

Five Tips I Give Every Client When a Sailing Gets Canceled

  1. Let the cruise line make the call. If there is any chance your sailing will be canceled, wait for the line to decide. Canceling on your own turns a full refund into a penalty.
  2. Read your travel insurance policy before you need it. Policies treat a cruise line cancellation differently from an illness or a missed connection. Know whether your plan covers prepaid hotels and nonrefundable flights when the supplier cancels.
  3. Book flights you can change. Refundable fares, airlines without change fees, and award tickets that can be redeposited for a small fee or none all give you room to adjust when plans fall apart.
  4. Keep every receipt. Cruise lines often reimburse related travel costs, but only with proof of purchase.
  5. Book with a travel advisor. When a sailing is disrupted, I handle the calls with the cruise line, track the refund, and help rebook so you are not sitting on hold from a ship in port. Start your next booking with Jackson Jetsetting.

I will keep this post updated as the Coast Guard and MSC release more about MSC Poesia.
