The SpongeBob Musical Is Coming to Royal Caribbean's Hero of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has picked the headline theater show for its next Icon Class ship, and the lead character's house is a pineapple. On October 2, 2026, the line announced that The SpongeBob Musical will play the Royal Theater on Hero of the Seas when the ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027. No cruise line has staged the Broadway show before.

Hero of the Seas is the fourth Icon Class ship, following Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, and Legend of the Seas, and each of the first three launched with a licensed Broadway title. I book Icon Class ships for clients every week, so this post covers what Royal Caribbean confirmed, what remains unannounced, and how I would plan around the show.

What Royal Caribbean announced for Hero of the Seas

The SpongeBob Musical will be the headline production in the Royal Theater, the main indoor theater on Icon Class ships. Royal Caribbean describes it as a reimagined version of the Broadway show, built for the ship and exclusive to the line. The production is licensed through Concord Theatricals and keeps the original book by Kyle Jarrow.

The plot follows the Broadway version. A volcano is about to erupt and destroy Bikini Bottom, and SpongeBob and his friends have a short window to stop it.

Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean's vice president of entertainment, said the lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed to have something for everyone, and she called the show “a story families know and love.” She also pointed to the technology and production scale the line plans to put behind it, though the announcement did not get into specifics.

What The SpongeBob Musical did on Broadway

The show opened at the Palace Theatre in December 2017 and ran through September 2018. It earned 12 Tony nominations in 2018, including Best Musical, which tied it for the most of any production that season. It won one, for Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

Director Tina Landau conceived the production, and the score is the unusual part. Each song came from a different artist, and the list includes Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Panic! At the Disco, The Flaming Lips, They Might Be Giants, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, along with a David Bowie song. That roster is why I would tell adults traveling without kids to keep the show on their list. One of the numbers is even titled “Hero Is My Middle Name,” which suits a ship called Hero of the Seas.

On Broadway, the cast did not wear mascot costumes. The actors played the characters in ordinary clothes whose colors hinted at who they were, and the set was built from pool noodles, traffic cones, and other everyday objects. Royal Caribbean has not shown costume or set designs for its version yet, so I would not assume the ship production looks the same.

How The SpongeBob Musical fits Royal Caribbean's Broadway lineup

Royal Caribbean has licensed Broadway titles for more than a decade. Hairspray played on Symphony of the Seas and Mamma Mia! on Allure of the Seas, among others.

The Icon Class ships have leaned toward titles that kids and grandparents both recognize:

  • Icon of the Seas (2024): The Wizard of Oz
  • Star of the Seas (2025): Back to the Future: The Musical
  • Legend of the Seas (2026): Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Hero of the Seas (2027): The SpongeBob Musical

I am booked on Legend of the Seas in November and will report back on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory once I have seen it. My Star of the Seas guide walks through the reservations to make before you board an Icon Class ship, and my Oasis Class versus Icon Class comparison explains how Royal Caribbean's two largest ship classes differ.

What Royal Caribbean has not announced about The SpongeBob Musical

Several details are still open:

  • Run time. The Broadway version ran about two and a half hours with an intermission. Ship versions of Broadway shows are often shorter.
  • Performance schedule. There is no word on how many times the show plays per sailing.
  • Casting. Royal Caribbean has not named a cast or creative team for the ship version.
  • Other ships. For now the show is confirmed only for Hero of the Seas.
  • The remaining entertainment on Hero of the Seas. The ice and water shows were not part of this announcement.

On Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, the Royal Theater show is included in the cruise fare, and seats are reserved through the Royal Caribbean app before the sailing. I expect Hero of the Seas to work the same way, but Royal Caribbean has not confirmed it. My guide to what is included on Royal Caribbean covers the other entertainment that comes with the fare.

Pro Tip: On Icon Class ships, show reservations open in the app weeks before sailing, and the popular times go first. Reserve the theater show the day bookings open, then plan dinner around it.

Hero of the Seas itineraries from Miami

The first sailing is a 3-night cruise from Miami on August 11, 2027, with a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay. After that, Hero of the Seas settles into 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, and every one of them includes CocoCay.

Western Caribbean sailings call at ports such as Cozumel, Roatan, and Costa Maya. Eastern Caribbean sailings visit Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas and Philipsburg, St. Maarten. If you have not sailed either route, my Eastern vs. Western Caribbean comparison lays out the differences.

The ship follows the Icon Class formula, with eight neighborhoods, the Category 6 waterpark, and Crown's Edge, a skywalk and zip line 154 feet above the ocean. Hero of the Seas will have nine pools, including a new one called Coconut Cove, plus 28 dining venues and the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse suite. The ship floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland in September and is being outfitted now. My Royal Caribbean ships by size guide shows where Icon Class sits in the fleet.

If you are driving to the port, my Miami cruise parking guide covers the garages. If you are flying in the night before, my list of hotels near the Miami cruise port will help you choose, and I can book that hotel with the cruise at no extra cost to you.

Who should book Hero of the Seas for The SpongeBob Musical

SpongeBob SquarePants premiered in 1999, so plenty of today's parents grew up with it. That gives the show a wider audience than a typical kids' title, and it helps explain why Royal Caribbean chose it for a ship aimed at multigenerational groups. My roundup of the best cruise lines for families names Royal Caribbean the top pick for thrill-seeking kids and teens, and my cruising with kids guide covers the rest of the planning.

I would not choose a ship for one show alone. The Icon Class ships share most of their features, so the better way to decide is by homeport, dates, and price. Hero of the Seas will be the newest ship in the fleet, and new ships carry the highest fares. As I write this, the first August weeks are priced well above the September sailings, which is typical once school is back in session. My Royal Caribbean cruise cost breakdown shows what a week runs beyond the base fare.

How to book Hero of the Seas

Hero of the Seas sailings from August 2027 onward are open for booking. My pricing matches booking direct, and I can often add group rates or promotions that do not appear on the cruise line's website. Send me your dates, and I will price out the cruise and a pre-cruise hotel in Miami as one trip.
