Tempe Mission Palms is a JdV by Hyatt hotel planted right on Mill Avenue, steps from the ASU campus, with a rooftop pool looking out over downtown Tempe. It joined World of Hyatt when Hyatt bought Destination Hotels, which makes it one of the best places in the Phoenix area to put Globalist perks to work. As a Globalist I landed a big suite upgrade, free breakfast, free parking, and a waived resort fee, and that stack of benefits is exactly why I would book it on Hyatt points.
Tempe is my go-to base whenever a trip involves ASU, spring training, or a business meeting in the East Valley. It is walkable, central, and full of energy from the university crowd. On my most recent stay I checked into Tempe Mission Palms, and it turned out to be one of the better uses of Hyatt status I have had in Arizona.
The hotel has an interesting backstory. It was a Destination Hotels property that came into the Hyatt family when Hyatt acquired Destination, and it now flies the JdV by Hyatt flag. For anyone who books with World of Hyatt, the JdV flag brings good news, because it means the full slate of Globalist benefits applies at a hotel sitting in the best spot in downtown Tempe.
Booking the Tempe Mission Palms
This is a JdV by Hyatt hotel, so it books on World of Hyatt points or cash and carries the full World of Hyatt benefit structure. That is the reason I am so high on it. Because it is a real Hyatt hotel rather than a partner property, Globalist perks land here the way they should, and they stacked up nicely on my stay.
As a Globalist, I was upgraded to a large suite that even included a boardroom, which was a serious jump from a standard room. On top of that I got complimentary full breakfast, free self-parking, and the resort fee waived, which are exactly the benefits that make Globalist status worth chasing. In a downtown location where parking and breakfast usually cost real money, having all of it included changed the math on the stay.
If you do not have Hyatt status, this is still a reasonable cash or points booking, but the value is highest when you can layer Globalist or even Explorist benefits on top. I would price the points rate against cash and factor in what breakfast, parking, and any resort fee would otherwise cost you.

Location
The location is the reason to book Tempe Mission Palms. The hotel sits right on Mill Avenue, the main drag of downtown Tempe, and it is a short walk to the ASU campus, Tempe Town Lake, and Tempe Beach Park. You can leave the car parked and walk to almost everything you came for.
That walkability makes it ideal for a few specific trips. For an ASU visit, family weekend, or graduation, you are steps from campus. For spring training, you are central to the Cactus League, and for business you are close to the light rail and a quick drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor. Few Phoenix-area hotels sit this squarely in the middle of the action.
Lobby and Check-In
The property is built around a lush central courtyard, and arriving into that green, shaded space is a nice contrast to the Arizona heat outside. Check-in was smooth, and my Globalist benefits were recognized without any back-and-forth, which is always the sign of a well-run Hyatt.
Getting the suite upgrade confirmed at the desk set the tone for the stay. The team clearly knew how to handle Globalist guests, and the whole arrival felt easy.
The Room
My upgraded suite was large, and the boardroom attached to it was an unexpected touch that made the space feel more like a small apartment than a hotel room. For a work trip that extra room was genuinely useful, and for a leisure stay it just gave everyone somewhere to spread out.
The standard rooms and suites here are comfortable and well kept, and some interior rooms open onto that central courtyard. Whether you land in a standard room or, like me, a big suite on points and status, the rooms do their job as a comfortable Mill Avenue base.
Pools and Amenities
The signature amenity is the rooftop pool, which looks out over downtown Tempe, the palm trees, and the desert sunsets, sitting right next to A Mountain. Being able to order food and drinks from a lounge chair or a cabana up on the roof is a nice way to end a hot Arizona day.
Beyond the pool, there is a fitness center and a tennis court, plus the concierge and airport-transportation services you would expect. The rooftop is the star, though, and it is a big part of what sets this hotel apart from the generic downtown options nearby.
Food and Drink
On-site dining runs through the recently remodeled Mission Grille, which handles breakfast and lunch, and Harry's Place, a lounge with cocktails and appetizers plus a patio. As a Globalist my complimentary breakfast was handled here, which is a nice perk given how central the hotel is.
The bigger dining story, as always in Tempe, is Mill Avenue itself. With the whole downtown restaurant and bar scene a short walk away, you are never short on options for dinner. I used the hotel dining for breakfast and drinks and walked out to Mill Avenue for the rest.
Service
Service was a strong point. The staff recognized and delivered my Globalist benefits cleanly, from the suite upgrade to breakfast to parking, and they were friendly throughout the stay. A hotel that handles status guests this smoothly is one I trust to book for clients, and it made the whole stay feel effortless.
