Cruise Cancellation Policies by Cruise Line

Every major cruise line lets you cancel without a penalty up to a set number of days before sailing, usually 75, 90, or 120 days, and then charges a rising share of the fare until it reaches 100% in the final weeks. The cruise cancellation policy on your booking decides how much of your money comes back, and the schedules differ more than most people expect.

Several lines rewrote theirs in 2026. Norwegian already starts charging at 119 days, Princess and Holland America have moved new 2027 bookings to the same 120-day line, and Royal Caribbean's US terms show a new schedule for bookings made on or after October 11, 2026. If you are booking now, read the tables below first.

Cruise Cancellation Policy by Cruise Line: At a Glance

These are the standard schedules each line publishes for US guests as of October 2026. Suites, holiday sailings, long voyages, and promotional fares can follow different terms, so confirm the schedule printed on your own invoice.

Pro Tip: The penalty-free date and the final payment date are usually the same day, but your booking can carry a non-refundable deposit that is lost even inside the penalty-free window. Check both the date and the deposit type on your confirmation.

How a Cruise Cancellation Policy Is Structured

Almost every cruise line uses three building blocks: a deposit window, where you can cancel and get everything back unless you chose a non-refundable deposit; a forfeit-the-deposit stage on some lines; and a percentage schedule, where the line keeps 25%, 50%, 75%, and finally 100% of the total fare as the sail date gets closer.

The penalty is usually calculated on the total price, which can include air, hotels, and transfers you bought through the line. Norwegian and Holland America both say their schedules apply to cruise, air, land, and other charges on the reservation. Both lines also treat a name change or a change of departure date as a cancellation subject to the same fees, so plan any switch before the penalty period starts.

Government taxes and fees are generally refunded, and Virgin Voyages states this even on its non-refundable fares. Prepaid extras such as drink packages and shore excursions follow their own rules; my guide to cruise line drink packages covers how those are sold.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises Cancellation Policy

Royal Caribbean's US guest terms list a new schedule for cruise bookings made on or after October 11, 2026. There is no charge up to 75 days out on 1 to 4 night cruises, 90 days on 5 to 9 nights, and 120 days on 10 nights or more (its FAQ still says 15 nights, so check your invoice), apart from any non-refundable deposit. After that the charge is 50% of the total price until 61 days, 75% from 60 to 31 days, and 100% inside 30 days. Bookings made before October 11 follow the schedule on their confirmation.

Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean's sister brand, publishes a similar ladder with one extra step. On 5 to 14 night sailings there is no charge up to 90 days, then 25% from 89 to 75 days, 50% from 74 to 61, 75% from 60 to 31, and 100% at 30 days or less. On 15+ night sailings the 25% step starts at 119 days.

Carnival Cruise Line Cancellation Policy

Carnival splits its schedule by length. On 2 to 5 day cruises there is no penalty up to 76 days. From 75 to 56 days you lose the deposit, from 55 to 30 days the charge is the deposit or 50% of the total fare (whichever is greater), from 29 to 15 days it is the deposit or 75%, and inside 14 days it is 100%. Cruises of six days or more, plus Alaska, Europe, transatlantic, and Panama Canal sailings, use the same steps with the free window running to 91 days and the deposit stage running from 90 to 56 days.

Early Saver fares carry a non-refundable deposit. If you cancel one before final payment, Carnival holds your money as a future cruise credit, less $50 per guest, usable within 24 months. My Carnival cruise cost guide covers how Early Saver compares with standard fares.

Disney Cruise Line Cancellation Policy

Disney Cruise Line splits its schedule at five nights. On 1 to 5 night cruises there is no fee at 90 days or more, the deposit from 89 to 45 days, 50% from 44 to 30, 75% from 29 to 15, and 100% inside 14 days. On six nights or more, the free window runs to 120 days and the deposit stage covers 119 to 56 days before the 50% step begins. Concierge and suite bookings start their penalties earlier, and the restricted inside, oceanview, and verandah categories are non-refundable and non-transferable from the day you book. More in my Disney cruise cost guide.

Norwegian Cruise Line Cancellation Policy

Norwegian Cruise Line applies a 120-day schedule to every sailing and splits it by cabin type. For Club Balcony Suites and below, the charge is 25% from 119 to 91 days, 50% from 90 to 61, 75% from 60 to 31, and 100% at 30 days or less. The Haven, suites, and Garden Villas move faster: 25% from 119 to 106 days, 50% from 105 to 91, 75% from 90 to 61, and 100% at 60 days or less. See my Norwegian cruise cost guide for pricing.

Princess Cruises and Holland America Line Cancellation Policy

Princess Cruises changed its rules for bookings made on or after September 2, 2026, on sailings from January 1, 2027, according to news reports as of October 2026. Princess has not yet posted the new schedule on its US site. As reported, on voyages of 1 to 44 days you lose only the deposit if you cancel before the 120-day final payment date, and the fee then steps up from 25% to 100%, reaching 100% at 60 days out. Older bookings keep the earlier, gentler schedule printed on their confirmation. If you are pricing a 2027 sailing, you can compare current Princess Cruises offers against the new terms.

Holland America Line made a similar change for bookings opened on or after September 29, 2026 that depart in 2027 or later. On standard cruises you get a full refund at 120 days or more, 75% back from 119 to 91 days, 50% back from 90 to 61 days, and nothing at 60 days or less. My Princess cruise cost guide and Holland America cruise cost guide cover fares on both lines.

MSC Cruises and Virgin Voyages Cancellation Policy

MSC Cruises publishes its schedule in its US booking terms. On standard cruises of four nights or less, you keep everything up to 75 days, lose the deposit from 74 to 51 days, then pay 50% from 50 to 31, 75% from 30 to 16, and 100% inside 15 days. Longer cruises follow the same pattern with earlier dates, and Yacht Club deposits are non-refundable. Check your invoice for the exact days on a 5 to 14 night cruise.

Virgin Voyages ties cancellation to the fare you pick. For bookings made on or after October 7, 2025, Lock It In and Base fares are 100% non-refundable apart from taxes and fees. Essential fares sit in between, and their refund terms depend on how far ahead you book, so read them on your quote. Premium and RockStar Suite fares add the flexibility to change dates or names up to 45 days before sailing. My Virgin Voyages cruise cost guide shows what each fare tier includes.

How To Protect Yourself from a Cruise Cancellation Policy Penalty

Three habits cover most of the risk. Choose a refundable deposit when the price difference is small. Make your final decision before the final payment date, which my guide to cruise deposits and final payment dates lists line by line. And buy cruise travel insurance soon after you book, because a covered reason can reimburse penalties the cruise line will not waive.

When my clients' plans change, I check the schedule, the deposit type, and whether moving the booking to another date would cost less than cancelling outright. Cancelling and rebooking is also how many guests capture a lower fare, which I cover in my post on what to do after a cruise price drop. Booking at the right moment helps too; see my guides to the best time to book a cruise, wave season cruise deals, and Black Friday cruise deals.

Cruise Cancellation Policy: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel a cruise and get a full refund? Yes, if you cancel before the penalty-free date on your booking and you paid a refundable deposit. With a non-refundable deposit, you lose the deposit but the rest of what you paid comes back.

Does changing my sail date count as a cancellation? On some lines, yes. Norwegian and Holland America both treat a departure date change or a name change as a cancellation subject to their fees, and Carnival charges a $50 per guest change fee on Early Saver bookings changed before final payment.

Do the new 2026 cancellation rules apply to my existing booking? Generally no. Princess, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean tied their changes to bookings made on or after a specific date in September or October 2026. Your confirmation shows the schedule that applies.

What if the cruise line cancels my cruise? When the line cancels, it typically offers a refund or a future cruise credit, and penalties do not apply. Check the line's notice for the exact terms.

Will travel insurance cover a cruise cancellation penalty? It can, for a covered reason such as illness. Cancel-for-any-reason coverage costs more and usually reimburses only part of the penalty, so read the policy before you buy.

Book a Cruise with a Cancellation Policy You Understand

My pricing is the same as booking direct, and you get access to group rates and promotions that do not always appear on the cruise line's website, plus somebody to call when plans change and the penalty clock is running. Send me your dates, and I will show you the cancellation schedule for each option before you put a deposit down.
