The Ultimate Alaska Cruise Guide

An Alaska cruise comes down to four decisions: the route, the month, the cruise line, and which glacier day is on the itinerary. Get those four right and the rest of the trip (ports, excursions, packing) mostly sorts itself out. Get one wrong and you can end up on a sailing that skips the glacier you came to see, or in a port shared with four other ships.

This Alaska cruise guide pulls together everything I have written about cruising Alaska, organized around those four decisions and focused on the 2027 season. Each section links to the deeper post when you are ready for the details.

Choosing Your Alaska Cruise Route

Alaska itineraries fall into two families. Inside Passage roundtrips leave Seattle or Vancouver, spend seven nights in Southeast Alaska, and come back to the same city. Gulf of Alaska sailings run one way between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward, the ports that serve Anchorage, which lets the ship reach Hubbard Glacier and College Fjord farther north.

Roundtrips are easier to fly into and usually cheaper. One-way sailings cost more in airfare but give you a second glacier day and the option to add a land tour to Denali. I break the two down by price, glaciers, flights, and sea days in my Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska comparison, and the land side is covered in my guide to Alaska cruisetours and Denali.

Seattle and Vancouver Alaska Cruise Ports

Seattle has two cruise terminals and is the easier city for most Americans to reach. Start with my Seattle cruise port guide, then sort out the car with Seattle cruise parking and the night before with hotels near the Seattle cruise port. Because foreign-flagged ships leaving Seattle must stop at a foreign port, Seattle roundtrips call at Victoria or Prince Rupert in British Columbia.

Vancouver is the starting point for most one-way Gulf sailings and plenty of roundtrips too. Boarding there means crossing into Canada, so pack the passport. My posts on Vancouver cruise parking and hotels near the Vancouver cruise port cover the logistics.

Best Time for an Alaska Cruise in 2027

The season runs from late April into September, and every month trades something. May and September bring lower fares and fewer families. June has the longest daylight. July and August are the warmest and the busiest, with the highest prices. Johns Hopkins Inlet in Glacier Bay only opens to cruise ships in late summer, after harbor seal pupping protections end, according to the National Park Service.

My full month-by-month breakdown lives in the best time to cruise Alaska, and the clothing side of it is in the Alaska cruise packing list by month.

Pro Tip: Alaska is the one region where I tell people to book a balcony if the budget stretches to it. The National Park Service says ships spend about nine to ten hours in Glacier Bay, and having your own outdoor space for a day that long beats fighting for rail space on the open deck.

Alaska Cruise Lines Compared for 2027

Princess Cruises has the deepest Alaska program. For 2027 it sends eight ships to Alaska with 187 departures, 85 calls at Glacier Bay, and 28 cruisetour options, according to the line's own announcement. Its signature route is the 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers between Vancouver and Whittier, which includes two glacier-viewing days. My picks are in the best Princess Alaska cruises, and you can check current Princess Cruises offers before you request a quote.

Holland America Line sends six ships to Alaska in 2027 and says every Alaska voyage includes scenic glacier cruising, with Glacier Bay on its standard routes. The line sails from Seattle, Vancouver, and Whittier on trips of 7 to 28 days. If you are deciding between these two, read Princess vs. Holland America in Alaska.

Royal Caribbean deploys four ships to Alaska in 2027. As of October 2026, its 2027 schedule showed Anthem of the Seas on one-way sailings between Vancouver and Seward. Virgin Voyages brings an adults-only option on Brilliant Lady, and I cover it in my Virgin Voyages Alaska first-timer guide and the Brilliant Lady Alaska review.

Alaska Cruise Glaciers: Which Ones Your Ship Visits

The glacier day is the reason most people book Alaska, and it varies more by itinerary than any other part of the trip. The big four are Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier, Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm, and College Fjord in Prince William Sound.

  • Glacier Bay National Park needs a National Park Service concession contract to enter. Seven companies hold the current ten-year contracts, which took effect October 1, 2019, and park rangers board each ship to narrate the day.
  • Hubbard Glacier sits at the head of Disenchantment Bay near Yakutat and is one of the few large tidewater glaciers in Alaska that has been advancing, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
  • Dawes Glacier sits at the end of Endicott Arm, a narrow fjord south of Juneau. My Dawes Glacier and Endicott Arm guide explains what the day looks like.
  • College Fjord is lined with glaciers named after East Coast colleges and appears mostly on one-way sailings ending in Whittier.

Tracy Arm needs a special mention for 2027. After a massive landslide and tsunami in Tracy Arm on August 10, 2025, Carnival, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean said they would avoid the fjord in 2026 and go to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier instead. If a 2027 itinerary still lists Tracy Arm, expect a possible swap. I rank all of these, including the Glacier Bay vs. Hubbard question, in Alaska cruise glaciers compared.

Alaska Cruise Ports and Excursions by Town

Juneau is the whale watching and glacier town, Skagway is the railway, Ketchikan is floatplanes and totem poles, and the best excursion in one port is often a poor value in the next. These are the posts to start with for each one.

Juneau Cruise Port

Juneau is the state capital and the busiest cruise port in Southeast Alaska. The city now caps cruise passengers at 16,000 a day Sunday through Friday and 12,000 on Saturdays, so the docks feel calmer than they used to on peak days. Start with things to do in Juneau on a cruise and the best Juneau cruise excursions.

Skagway and Ketchikan Cruise Ports

Skagway is a Gold Rush town at the top of the Inside Passage, known for the White Pass railway. Read things to do in Skagway and the best Skagway cruise excursions. Ketchikan is usually the first or last Alaska stop and the place for totem poles and floatplanes: see my Ketchikan cruise port guide, things to do in Ketchikan, and the best Ketchikan excursions.

Sitka and Icy Strait Point Cruise Ports

Sitka mixes Russian and Tlingit history with good wildlife viewing. Start with my Sitka cruise port guide, then things to do in Sitka and the best Sitka excursions. Icy Strait Point is a Huna Tlingit-owned destination near Hoonah, covered in things to do in Icy Strait Point and the best Icy Strait Point excursions.

Victoria and Prince Rupert Cruise Ports

Seattle roundtrips end with a short evening call in Victoria or a stop in Prince Rupert. My posts on things to do in Victoria, BC, the best Victoria cruise excursions, and the Prince Rupert cruise port guide will help you plan those.

Ship excursions in Alaska sell out early, especially whale watching and floatplane tours, and independent operators often run the same trips in smaller groups. You can compare the options across every port on Viator and book what fits your port times.

Booking an Alaska Cruise for 2027

Alaska books earlier than the Caribbean because the season is short and balconies on glacier-heavy routes go first. Lines opened 2027 Alaska sales back in 2025, so the best cabin choice is already shrinking. If you add a land tour, the hotel nights in Denali are limited too.

When I plan an Alaska trip as your travel agent, I look at the whole thing together: which glacier the ship visits, whether the flights work for a one-way cruise, the hotel the night before, and travel insurance, which I strongly recommend for a trip this far from home. My cruise travel insurance guide explains what to look for.

Alaska Cruise Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for an Alaska cruise? For most first-timers I lean toward June or early September. June has the most daylight, and September has lower fares and fewer crowds, with cooler weather and more rain as the trade-off.

Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruise? Every Alaska cruise from Seattle or Vancouver touches Canada, so a passport is the safest choice. Check your cruise line's documentation rules for your sailing and confirm before you book flights.

Which cruise lines go to Glacier Bay? The National Park Service awarded the current concession contracts to Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Cunard, Seabourn, Viking, and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Holding a contract does not guarantee every sailing goes in, so check your specific itinerary.

Is an Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska cruise better? A roundtrip Inside Passage cruise is simpler and usually cheaper. A one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise adds more glacier time and pairs well with a Denali land tour.

How far ahead should I book an Alaska cruise? For summer 2027, now. Lines released 2027 Alaska sailings in 2025, and balcony cabins on the most popular dates go first.

Plan Your Alaska Cruise With Jackson Jetsetting

My pricing is the same as booking direct with the cruise line. On top of that, I can often add group rates or promotions that do not show up on the cruise line's website, and you have a real person to call if a flight cancels or a land tour changes. Send me your dates, and I will price out the cruise, the hotel the night before, and any land tour as one Alaska trip.
