Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska Cruise: Which Route To Book
The Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska cruise choice is the first decision on any Alaska trip, and it shapes everything after it. An Inside Passage cruise is a roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver through the islands and fjords of Southeast Alaska. A Gulf of Alaska cruise covers the same Southeast ports but runs one way, between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward, and adds the glaciers of the northern coast.
My quick take: first-timers on a tighter budget or a short vacation window should book the Inside Passage roundtrip. Anyone who wants two glacier days, or wants to see Denali on the same trip, should book the Gulf of Alaska one-way and accept the more complicated flights.

If you are still at the very start of planning, my Alaska cruise guide walks through the route, the month, the line, and the glacier day in order.
Inside Passage Cruise Route and Ports
The Inside Passage is the protected coastal waterway that runs through the islands of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia. A typical 7-night roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver spends a day at sea heading north, calls at three of the classic towns (Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka, or Icy Strait Point), spends a day scenic cruising near a glacier, and then turns back south.
Seattle roundtrips also include a stop in Canada, usually Victoria or Prince Rupert, because foreign-flagged ships sailing from a U.S. port must call at a foreign port before returning. Victoria is usually a short evening call. My guides to things to do in Victoria on a cruise and the Prince Rupert cruise port guide cover both.
The trade-off is time at sea. A Seattle or Vancouver roundtrip spends a chunk of the week sailing up and back along the British Columbia coast, which is scenic but not Alaska.
Gulf of Alaska Cruise Route and Ports
A Gulf of Alaska cruise sails one way between Vancouver and the Anchorage-area ports, Whittier or Seward. Because the ship does not need to turn around, it can keep going north past Juneau and Skagway into the open Gulf, which puts Hubbard Glacier and Prince William Sound on the map.
Princess calls its version the 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers, sailing between Vancouver and Anchorage (Whittier) with two glacier-viewing days. As of October 2026, Royal Caribbean's summer 2027 schedule showed Anthem of the Seas sailing one way between Vancouver and Seward. Holland America also sails from Whittier in 2027.
Pro Tip: The northbound and southbound versions of the same Gulf sailing are mirror images. Northbound ends the trip on a high note with the biggest glaciers, while southbound lets you do the Denali land tour first and finish with a relaxing cruise. I nudge people who are worried about land-tour fatigue toward the southbound direction.
Glaciers on the Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska
This is where the two routes separate the most. Inside Passage roundtrips usually include one glacier day: Glacier Bay National Park on lines that hold a park permit, or Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm. Some longer roundtrips reach Hubbard Glacier too.
Gulf of Alaska sailings usually stack two. On Princess, that is two glacier-viewing days pulled from Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier, and College Fjord, depending on the sailing. College Fjord in particular is close to Whittier, so it rarely shows up on roundtrips.
One 2027 caveat applies to both routes. After a massive landslide and tsunami in Tracy Arm on August 10, 2025, Carnival, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean said they would skip Tracy Arm in 2026 and visit Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier instead. I compare every glacier, including which is better for calving and which is better for the full-day national park experience, in Alaska cruise glaciers compared. If your sailing lands in Endicott Arm, my Dawes Glacier cruise guide covers that day.
Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska Cruise Prices and Flights
Fares change by sailing, ship, and cabin, so I will not quote a single number. As a pattern, Inside Passage roundtrips from Seattle tend to be the cheapest way to cruise Alaska, and one-way Gulf sailings tend to price higher for the same ship and cabin type. The bigger difference is usually the airfare.
A roundtrip cruise means a simple roundtrip flight, and if you live in the Pacific Northwest, you may be able to drive. My Seattle cruise port guide and Seattle cruise parking post cover the drive-in option. A one-way cruise needs an open-jaw ticket, flying into Vancouver and home from Anchorage or the reverse, plus the transfer between Anchorage and the port in Whittier or Seward, which is a drive of a couple of hours or more. Those pieces add cost, so price them together before you decide.
For one-way cruises starting in Canada, I usually recommend arriving the day before. My list of hotels near the Vancouver cruise port is a good place to start.
Denali Cruisetours on the Gulf of Alaska Route
A Gulf of Alaska cruise is the natural base for a cruisetour, which bundles the cruise with several nights on land in Denali, Fairbanks, or the Kenai Peninsula. Princess offers 28 cruisetour options for 2027, and Holland America pairs its 7-day Glacier Discovery cruises with Denali land packages. Since you already end or start in the Anchorage area, the land portion slots in without backtracking.
Inside Passage roundtrips can technically pair with a land tour, but you would be flying to Anchorage separately. My Alaska cruisetours explainer covers whether the land portion is worth it.
Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska for Families and First-Timers
Families usually do better on the Inside Passage roundtrip. Flights are simpler, the fare is usually lower, and kids tend to care more about the port days (whale watching, dog sledding, the railway in Skagway) than a second glacier. The ports are the same towns on either route, so you are not giving up the classic stops.
Couples, retirees, and anyone treating Alaska as a once-in-a-lifetime trip get more out of the Gulf route. A second glacier day gives you another chance at clear weather on the ice, and the Denali add-on turns a cruise into a full Alaska vacation.
Which Cruise Lines Sail Each Alaska Route
Princess Cruises and Holland America Line run both routes heavily, with roundtrips from Seattle and Vancouver and one-way sailings to Whittier. My Princess vs. Holland America Alaska comparison helps you pick between them, and you can browse current Princess Cruises offers for Voyage of the Glaciers dates. Royal Caribbean sends four ships in 2027, with roundtrips plus the Seward one-way sailings listed as of October 2026. Virgin Voyages runs Brilliant Lady roundtrips, covered in my Virgin Voyages Alaska guide.
Whichever route you choose, Juneau is on almost every itinerary. If you want to plan a whale watching trip or the Mendenhall Glacier before you sail, you can compare small-group options on Viator, and my best Juneau cruise excursions post explains which ones I like.
Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska Cruise: Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Inside Passage part of a Gulf of Alaska cruise? Yes. A Gulf of Alaska sailing passes through the Inside Passage and calls at the same Southeast Alaska towns, then continues north into the Gulf.
Which route sees more glaciers? The Gulf of Alaska route, in most cases. Princess builds two glacier-viewing days into its Voyage of the Glaciers, while most roundtrips include one.
Can I do a Gulf of Alaska cruise from Seattle? One-way Gulf sailings generally start or end in Vancouver. Seattle itineraries are almost always roundtrips because of U.S. cabotage rules for foreign-flagged ships.
Is the Gulf of Alaska rougher than the Inside Passage? The open Gulf is more exposed than the sheltered Inside Passage, so motion is more likely on that stretch. If you are prone to seasickness, read my tips on avoiding seasickness on a cruise and book a midship cabin on a lower deck.
What is the best month for either route? The season runs late April through September. My best time to cruise Alaska post covers each month, and the Alaska cruise packing list covers what to bring.
Book Your Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska Cruise
The route decision is easier when you can see the whole trip priced at once: cruise fare, flights in and out, the hotel night before, and the Anchorage transfer. My pricing is the same as booking direct, I can often add group rates or promotions that are not on the cruise line's website, and you will have a person to call if plans change. Send me your dates, and I will price both routes side by side.
