Alaska Cruisetours Explained: Denali, Rail, and Whether the Land Portion Is Worth It
An Alaska cruisetour is a cruise and a guided land trip sold as one package. You sail the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska for about a week, then spend several more days inland at Denali, Fairbanks, Talkeetna, or the Kenai Peninsula, with the rail tickets, lodges, motorcoach transfers, and luggage handling arranged by the cruise line.
The land portion is the only way a cruise package reaches Denali National Park and the interior, which no ship can get to. It also adds days, cost, and a lot of packing and unpacking. Below, I walk through how these packages work, which lines run their own lodges and rail cars, how long they run, and when I would tell you to plan the land portion yourself instead.
Alaska Cruisetours at a Glance: Who Runs What
Four big lines sell Alaska cruisetours for 2026 and 2027, and they are not built the same way. Princess and Holland America own lodges and rail cars in Alaska. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity rely on partner lodges.
| Cruise line | Lodges | Rail | Typical length |
| Princess Cruises | Five Princess-owned wilderness lodges | Princess Ultra Dome rail cars, including Direct-to-the-Wilderness service from Whittier | 28 cruisetour itineraries for 2027, up to a 17-night escorted trip |
| Holland America Line | Holland America Denali Lodge plus hotels in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and the Yukon | McKinley Explorer, privately owned two-level glass-domed rail cars | 9 to 16 days total, with 2 to 7 days on land |
| Royal Caribbean | Partner lodges such as Denali Park Village, Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, and Alyeska Resort | Glass-domed Wilderness Express rail car | 9 to 13 nights, with 3 to 4 days on land |
| Celebrity Cruises | Partner lodges | Glass-domed train plus motorcoach | Varies by package |

How an Alaska Cruisetour Works
Most cruisetours pair a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise between Vancouver and Southcentral Alaska with a land tour at the northern end. The ship side starts or ends at Whittier or Seward, the two ports closest to Anchorage, and the land side runs inland from there. My Inside Passage vs. Gulf of Alaska guide explains why the one-way route sees more glaciers and fewer repeat ports than a round trip from Seattle.
On land, the line handles the logistics that make an Alaska road trip tiring. Your suitcases are moved between hotels for you, rail and motorcoach seats are reserved, and the timing is built around train schedules. Depending on the line and package, a tour director, local guides, park tours, and some meals are included as well.
Pro Tip: Read the package description line by line for meals. Some land days include breakfast or a Denali park tour, and others leave every meal and activity to you, which changes the real cost of the trip.
Princess Alaska Cruisetours: Lodges and Rail
Princess has the largest land operation of any cruise line in Alaska. For 2027, the line is selling 28 cruisetour itineraries paired with four ships, Crown Princess, Discovery Princess, Royal Princess, and Star Princess, sailing between Whittier (Anchorage) and Vancouver. The longest is a 17-night Denali Escorted Cruisetour that stays at all five Princess lodges.
The five lodges are:
- Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, about one mile from the Denali National Park entrance, with 656 rooms.
- Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, inside Denali State Park, with 460 rooms and a view of the mountain on clear days.
- Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge, on the Chena River in Fairbanks, with 326 rooms.
- Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, in Cooper Landing on the Kenai River, with 86 rooms and access to Kenai Fjords National Park by excursion.
- Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge, near Glennallen and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, with 85 rooms.
The rail side is just as much a Princess product. The line operates 10 Ultra Dome rail cars with full glass domes, open-air outdoor platforms, and a dining level. Standard service runs daily from May through September between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, and Fairbanks, and the Direct-to-the-Wilderness service connects the Whittier cruise terminal to the Denali and Talkeetna area lodges, so you can step off the ship and reach the lodges the same day.
Princess also lets you see up to four national parks on a single cruisetour: Glacier Bay, Denali, Kenai Fjords, and Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway. You can compare the ship side in my roundup of the best Princess Alaska cruises, and check the current Princess Cruises offers to see which cruisetour dates are discounted. If Princess is new to you, my Princess first-time guide covers how the line works on board.
Holland America Alaska Cruisetours: Denali Lodge and the Yukon
Holland America calls its packages Alaska cruisetours, and they run 9 to 16 days with anywhere from 2 to 7 days on land. The line's own property at the park is the Holland America Denali Lodge, a riverfront wilderness lodge, and packages offer one, two (Double Denali), or three (Triple Denali) nights there. More nights in Denali means more chances to see the mountain, which hides behind clouds much of the summer.
The McKinley Explorer is Holland America's rail product, using privately owned two-level glass-domed rail cars. Land portions visit Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali, and Seward, and the cruise side sails from Vancouver with calls such as Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Denali park tours are included in the package.
The feature that sets Holland America apart is the Yukon. The Alaska, Denali, and Yukon cruisetours include overnight stays in Dawson City, a tour director for the land portion, and a Klondike gold rush tour created with the HISTORY Channel. If you love the gold rush history in Skagway, covered in my guide to things to do in Skagway, the Yukon packages carry that story inland. My breakdown of what is included on Holland America covers the cruise side.
Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Alaska Cruisetours
Royal Caribbean's cruisetours typically run 9 to 13 nights with 3 to 4 days on land, before or after the cruise. Travel is by the glass-domed Wilderness Express rail car and motorcoach, with locally based Adventure Guides. The lodges are well-known Alaska properties the line partners with, including Denali Park Village on the Nenana River, Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, Alyeska Resort, Seward Windsong Lodge, Pike's Waterfront Lodge in Fairbanks, and Sophie's Station Suites. Select meals on land are included, and what is covered varies by itinerary.
Celebrity also sells Alaska cruisetours for 2026 and 2027, combining a cruise with an inland trip on a glass-domed train and motorcoach, lodge stays, and local guides. Celebrity sails Alaska with Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Solstice, and Celebrity Summit from Vancouver, Seattle, and Seward. The line publishes fewer land details on its main pages than Princess or Holland America, so I price each Celebrity package individually before recommending it.
How Long Should an Alaska Cruisetour Be
Most cruisetours land somewhere between 9 and 17 nights. A 7-night cruise plus 3 or 4 nights on land is the most common shape, and it covers Denali plus either Talkeetna, Fairbanks, or Anchorage. The longer packages add the Kenai Peninsula, Copper River, or the Yukon.
My rule of thumb is two nights at Denali at minimum. One night often means arriving in the afternoon, doing a park tour the next morning, and leaving right after, which leaves no slack if the weather closes in. If the budget allows only a short land portion, I would still choose two nights at one lodge over one night each at two.
Alaska Cruisetour Order: Land First or Cruise First
Most packages can be booked in either direction, and both have a case.
- Land first gets the long travel days and frequent hotel changes done while you are fresh, then ends with a week of unpacking once on the ship. It works well for people who want the trip to wind down.
- Cruise first lets you settle in on the ship and recover from the flight before the busier land days. It ends the trip in Fairbanks or Anchorage, where flights home are easy to find.
Timing within the season matters too. Early and late season trips are cooler, and some land services run only from May through September. My guide to the best time to cruise Alaska covers the month-by-month trade-offs, and my Alaska cruise packing list helps you pack for both the coast and the interior.
When To Plan the Alaska Land Portion Yourself
A cruisetour hands the transfers, trains, and luggage to the cruise line, but building your own land trip makes sense in a few cases:
- You want to drive and stop where you like. Renting a car in Anchorage gives you freedom the motorcoach schedule does not.
- You want a specific property or experience the packages skip, such as a remote fly-in lodge or extra days in Kenai Fjords.
- You are on a round-trip Seattle cruise, so a package tied to a one-way sailing does not fit.
The trade-off is that you take on the transfers between the port and Anchorage, the train or rental car, and the hotel bookings yourself. If you go that route, you can book this on Viator for Denali park tours, flightseeing, and guided hikes once your dates are set.
Alaska Cruisetours: Frequently Asked Questions
Which cruise lines own lodges in Alaska? Princess and Holland America. Princess runs five wilderness lodges, including Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, and Holland America runs the Holland America Denali Lodge. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity use partner lodges.
Is the Alaska train included in a cruisetour? Yes. Rail travel is a core part of the package on Princess, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity's packages also include a glass-domed train. The specific rail segments depend on the itinerary.
Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruisetour? Most cruisetours begin or end in Vancouver, and Holland America's Yukon packages spend time in Canada, so plan on a passport.
Is an Alaska cruisetour worth it? For first-time Alaska visitors who want to see Denali without driving, I think it is the best way to do it. If you would rather drive, choose your own lodges, or you are on a round-trip Seattle sailing, plan the land portion independently.
How far ahead should I book an Alaska cruisetour? Early. Lodge rooms and rail seats are limited, and the popular Denali packages fill before the cruise-only cabins do. My guide to cruise travel insurance is worth reading before you put down a deposit this far out.
Book Your Alaska Cruisetour With Jackson Jetsetting
I book these Alaska land and sea packages all season, and the decisions that shape the trip are small ones: which lodge, how many Denali nights, and whether the order of land and sea fits your flights. My pricing is the same as booking direct, I can often add group rates or promotions that are not on the line's website, and you have a person to call when a flight or train time changes. Send me your dates, and I will price the cruisetour options side by side.
