Sitka on Brilliant Lady: The Dock, the Shuttle & a Curated Day

Sitka is the second Alaska stop on my Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady sailing, and it is my favorite of the three ports. It is unlike anywhere else in Southeast Alaska: the former capital of Russian America, layered over deep Tlingit history, facing the open Pacific. It sees fewer ships than Ketchikan or Juneau, so it stays calmer. This is the Virgin-specific version, focused on the dock and how to plan your day. Where Brilliant Lady Docks (and the Shuttle)
Here is the one logistical thing to understand about Sitka: Brilliant Lady docks at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, the "Old Sitka Dock," about 5 miles north of downtown on Halibut Point Road. It is a real deep-water dock, so no tendering, but it is not walking distance to town. A free shuttle gets you downtown in about 10–15 minutes, dropping you near Harbor Drive in the middle of everything.
I actually quite enjoyed the bus ride, whose drivers gave an incredible introduction to the city.
My tip: reserve your shuttle time slot if the option is offered, and do not cut the return too close. Because of that 5-mile gap, plan to catch a shuttle back by about 3:30 p.m. for a typical late-afternoon all-aboard. My sailing is scheduled roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Sitka; confirm your own times. Brilliant Lady made her first Sitka call in May 2026, so the port is now used to Virgin's ship.
A Curated Day in Town
Once the shuttle drops you downtown, almost everything worth doing is walkable:
Sitka National Historical Park (Totem Park) — easy forested trails along the water lined with Tlingit and Haida totem poles, on the site of the 1804 Battle of Sitka. Free, flat, and the quietest hour on the whole itinerary. It also can lead to the Alaska Raptor Center if you’re doing a walking tour of town.
St. Michael's Cathedral — the onion-domed Russian Orthodox cathedral in the center of town; a small donation gets you inside.
Castle Hill (Baranof Castle State Historic Site) — a short climb, free, and the spot where Alaska was transferred from Russia to the U.S. in 1867. Good harbor views.
Russian Bishop's House and the harbor walk — more Russian-America history and a working-harbor stroll.
The Wildlife Worth Booking
Sitka's specialty is wildlife, and two local nonprofits are worth your time (full details and prices in my best Sitka excursions guide):
Fortress of the Bear — a rescue sanctuary for orphaned brown and black bears, viewed from elevated platforms. A few miles out, so you want a taxi or a tour that includes transport. Book on Viator!
Alaska Raptor Center — a rehabilitation center for bald eagles and other raptors, up close. Also bookable on Viator.
Combo van tour — many operators bundle Fortress of the Bear, the Raptor Center, and Totem Park into one guided loop, which solves the transport for the out-of-town stops. If you book one thing, book this.
Sea otter and whale watching — boat tours into Sitka Sound for otters, humpbacks, sea lions, and eagles. Sitka's open-Pacific setting makes for strong marine wildlife. This is what we opted for on our Sitka day, and it was incredible.
Local Tips
Reserve your shuttle and mind the clock. The 5-mile distance to downtown is the only thing that trips people up. Build a buffer for the ride back.
Pair the out-of-town stops. Fortress of the Bear is outside walking range, and the Raptor Center is an easy stop along the way. Do them together rather than making two trips.
Dress for rain and a little chill. Sitka faces the open Pacific, so it can run cooler and breezier than the inside-passage ports. July highs are around 60–62°F.
Do Totem Park even if you do nothing else. It is free, flat, and the best hour in town.

Take the free shuttle into town, walk the totems at Sitka National Historical Park, step into St. Michael's, and get close to rescued bears and eagles just outside of town.
