Disney Cruise Line Is Testing Wristbands Instead of Key to the World Cards on Disney Treasure
Disney Cruise Line is about to run an entire sailing without Key to the World cards. Guests boarding Disney Treasure at Port Canaveral on Saturday, October 10, 2026 will receive a wristband at check-in, and that wristband will do the job the card normally does for the full 7-night cruise.
The timing could not be better for me. I board Disney Treasure on October 17, the same day the test sailing returns, to record a full ship tour for my YouTube channel. I was already excited about this cruise, and now I have one more thing to look for when I get to the terminal. Disney has only confirmed the test for the October 10 sailing, so I'm hoping it gets extended one more week and I get to try the wristband myself.
How the Disney Treasure Wristband Test Works
Disney Cruise Line announced the test in a notice to travel advisors. On a normal Disney cruise, your Key to the World card is waiting at your stateroom when you arrive. On the October 10 sailing, those cards will not be there.
Guests who already own a DisneyBand+ or a MagicBand+ from the parks will have it activated at check-in, which is how those bands work on Disney ships today. Everyone else gets a Key to the World wristband during check-in.
Here’s a look at the wristband:
The test wristband is a loaner. Disney says it works on this sailing only, so it will not open anything at Walt Disney World, at Disneyland, or on a future cruise. When Disney Treasure returns on October 17, guests drop the wristbands into collection bins outside the terminal. Guests who bought a DisneyBand+ keep it.
Disney was careful to call this a test. The notice told advisors that the line tries new things often and that "not all of them become part of our operation." No other ships or sail dates have been announced.
What Key to the World Cards Do on a Disney Cruise
The Key to the World card is your room key, your onboard charge card, and the ID you scan when you leave and return to the ship in port. Every guest in the stateroom gets one.
DisneyBand+ arrived on Disney ships in 2023 as an optional add-on that handles those same three jobs from your wrist. Bands launched at $34.99 for solid colors and $44.99 for themed designs, and a MagicBand+ from Walt Disney World or Disneyland works the same way on board. Until this test, guests with a band still received a card too.
If you are new to the line, my guide to what is included on a Disney cruise covers the rest of the basics, and my Disney Castaway Club guide explains what repeat guests earn. I also book Disney cruises for clients through my travel agency if you want help planning yours.
Questions Disney Cruise Line Has Not Answered About the Wristbands
The notice left several details open, and I'll be looking for answers to all of them.
The wristband design. Disney has not shown the wristband or said whether it resembles a DisneyBand+.
How stateroom power will work. Many Disney staterooms have a slot by the door, and a card in that slot keeps the lights and air conditioning on. Disney has not said what guests on the test sailing should use in place of a Key to the World card.
Whether guests can ask for a card. Some people dislike having anything on their wrist, and Disney has not said if a card will be available on request.
What happens to the souvenir. Plenty of Disney cruisers save their Key to the World cards from every sailing. A wristband that goes back in a bin leaves them without a keepsake.
Whether the test expands. Disney has not named other ships or dates.
Pro Tip: If you are on the October 10 sailing, pack an old hotel key or a used gift card in case your stateroom has a card slot for the lights. Any card works in that slot, and you will not have to leave a credit card or ID by the door.
How Virgin Voyages and Princess Cruises Use Wearables
Other cruise lines already sail without key cards, and they show two different ways Disney could go.
Virgin Voyages gives every sailor a wristband and collects the bands at the end of the cruise, which is the same process Disney is using for this test. I cover the rest of that setup in my guide to what is included on Virgin Voyages.
Princess Cruises uses the Medallion, a small disc you can wear on your wrist, clip on, hang from a lanyard, or keep in a pocket. That flexibility answers the main complaint from people who dislike wristbands. My Princess Cruises first-time guide explains how the Medallion works, and you can check current Princess Cruises offers if that style of cruise appeals to you.
A wristband makes the most sense at the pool and on a beach day at Castaway Cay, where a card is one more thing to keep track of. A card is still easier to hand to a bartender or a shop cashier. I expect Disney is running this test to learn which of those tradeoffs guests care about most.
What the Disney Treasure Wristband Test Means for Your Disney Cruise
If you sail on October 10, bring any DisneyBand+ or MagicBand+ you already own, expect a wristband at check-in if you do not have one, and plan to return it at the terminal on your way out. My Port Canaveral embarkation guide walks through the rest of the check-in process.
If you sail on any other date or ship, nothing changes for now. You will still get a Key to the World card, and DisneyBand+ remains optional.
Disney Treasure is the sister ship to Disney Wish, so my Disney Wish review is a good preview until my Disney Treasure coverage goes up. If a Disney cruise is on your list, I can help you pick the right ship, stateroom, and itinerary. You can book with Jackson Jetsetting whenever you are ready.
Why I'm Excited to Board Disney Treasure on October 17
I'm excited to be on board the very next sailing. I arrive at Port Canaveral the same day the test guests hand their wristbands back, so I should get a look at how the return process works even if my cruise goes back to cards.
My hope is that Disney keeps the test going for the October 17 sailing and I get to try it. If that happens, I'll use the wristband for the full cruise and show how it handles the stateroom door, onboard purchases, and getting on and off the ship in port. If my sailing gets cards, I'll ask the crew how the test went and share what I learn.
I'll update this post after I'm back, and the full Disney Treasure ship tour will be on my YouTube channel. If you want to be on board for whatever Disney tries next, reach out through my booking page and I'll help you plan it.
