Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk Review: The Grand Club Makes It

BOTTOM LINE
The Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk is a strong points value for anyone in the World of Hyatt program, sitting right on the River Walk downtown. The standout is the Grand Club lounge, with a real breakfast and an evening spread of heavy apps plus complimentary beer and wine. I stayed as a Globalist, scored a suite upgrade, and this became one of my easier recommendations in Texas, as long as a big convention-style hotel is what you are after.
San Antonio is one of those cities where being on the River Walk changes your whole trip, and the Grand Hyatt puts you right in the middle of it. I booked this stay with World of Hyatt points, walked in as a Globalist, and came away thinking it is one of the better domestic uses of Hyatt points you can find. The location, the club, and the upgrade all lined up. On this stay I booked three nights at 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night — including the night of the Alamo Bowl, with the Arizona Wildcats in town — and split the trip between two nights in a suite and one in a regular room. For a hotel this well located, that redemption rate is a steal.
This is a big convention-style hotel, so it is not a boutique escape, and I will be clear about that. But for a points traveler who wants a comfortable, well-located base with a standout lounge, it delivers. Here is my full review.
Booking the Grand Hyatt San Antonio
This hotel is a reliable points play for World of Hyatt members, and I think it is one of the better domestic values in the program. Redeeming points here, especially when cash rates climb during a convention or event, can save you a meaningful amount. Always compare the points rate against the cash rate to make sure the redemption is a good one for your dates.
Globalist perks stack up nicely here: club access, suite upgrade potential, and the elite benefits you expect from Hyatt. San Antonio hosts a steady stream of conventions and events, and cash rates swing hard around them while the points rate stays flat, so a little planning goes a long way. Book directly through World of Hyatt to keep all of those benefits intact.
Best cards for booking
To get the most from a Hyatt stay here, the cards I would reach for are the World of Hyatt Credit Card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Location
The Grand Hyatt sits directly on the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, which is exactly where you want to be. You can step out of the hotel and be on the water-level walkway among the restaurants and boats within moments. It is also connected to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, so it draws a lot of business and event traffic.
The hotel sits across from the Alamodome, with a pedestrian bridge making that walk easy on event days. The Alamo, the Tower of the Americas, and the main stretch of River Walk dining are all within a comfortable walk. If you are flying in, it is a short rideshare from San Antonio International Airport.
You do not need a car for a downtown-focused trip, which keeps things easy and cheap. When I stay here, I lean into the walkability, spending mornings on the River Walk and using the club in the evening before heading back out. It is a setup that makes a short San Antonio trip feel effortless.
Lobby and Check-In
This is a large, convention-oriented property, so the lobby can get busy during major events, and cash rates tend to spike right alongside it, which is exactly when a points redemption pays off most. Even so, check-in was smooth, and my Globalist status and suite upgrade were handled at the desk.
The scale never got in the way of a relaxed arrival, especially with the Grand Club waiting upstairs as a calm retreat above the crowds. If you value a quiet boutique feel above all, the size is worth weighing, but for most travelers it works in your favor.
The Room
This is a large hotel with more than a thousand rooms plus a set of suites, and the standard rooms are clean, modern, and generously sized with the polished Grand Hyatt look. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the higher floors give you strong downtown and River Walk views. It is a comfortable, business-forward room rather than a themed or boutique experience. Our suite came with a bar area by the entry — microwave, a larger fridge with a little freezer section, and standard drip coffee rather than Nespresso — plus a fold-out couch that effectively gives a family two separate rooms. The televisions are clearly newer than the rest of the room and support casting from your own devices, something I keep noticing at Hyatts. Two nitpicks from the video: no USB-C plugs by the king bed, and the bathroom is surprisingly tiny for a suite — the American classic of a big suite with a regular-room bathroom.
As a World of Hyatt Globalist, I was upgraded to a suite for this stay, which is one of the perks that makes chasing that status worthwhile. The extra living space and the higher-floor view made the stay feel like a real step up from the base room. Upgrades depend on availability, but this property has a healthy number of suites, which helps your odds.
Pools and Amenities
The Grand Hyatt has an outdoor rooftop pool that is open year-round and heated, with panoramic views over downtown San Antonio and comfortable loungers on the sundeck. It is a nice place to cool off after a day of walking, and the rooftop setting makes it feel like a step above a typical hotel pool. There is also a fitness center for keeping up your routine. The heated pool is a full lap pool with a view of the Tower of the Americas, and kids were happily splashing around even on our cold winter stay — there is no bar or food service up there, but you can call down and they will deliver to the pool deck. The gym genuinely surprised me: it is one of the biggest hotel gyms I have seen domestically, with all pretty new equipment, and there is even a paid arcade and a laundry room on that level.
The real amenity story here, though, is the Grand Club lounge, and it is the feature I tell people about first. Access comes with a Club-level room, a suite, or Globalist status, and it changes how the whole stay feels. Breakfast is served here rather than at the restaurant downstairs, and it is a solid spread to start your day.
The evening offering is where it really earns its keep. During the cocktail hours, the club puts out heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cheese and charcuterie selection, and typically a hot item, alongside complimentary beer and wine that covers red, white, rose, and sparkling. Being able to grab a glass of wine and a plate of food before heading out, or making it your light dinner, adds real value. For a points traveler, that free food and drink stretches the value of the redemption even further.
Food and Drink
On the dining side, Bar Rojo is the hotel's River Walk-facing restaurant and bar, known for a casual feel, regionally inspired plates, and cocktails. With the club now handling breakfast, Bar Rojo leans into lunch, dinner, and drinks. Between the club spread and the River Walk restaurants right outside, you will never go hungry here. In the lobby itself you have Rojo, the hotel bar that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the Perks grab-and-go counter next to it. The escalator ride up to the main lobby passes some really cool art and chandeliers, and — a fun surprise — there are two Topgolf suites right in the main lobby that you can rent out.
The River Walk restaurants and boat rides are right outside the door, so I usually mix a meal or two on property with walks along the water. That combination of a strong on-site club, a casual restaurant, and the whole River Walk scene at your feet is hard to beat for an easy downtown trip. The building itself is multi-level and steps all the way down to the Riverwalk, putting you a short walk from the main drag and all its restaurants. Hemisfair is practically on hotel grounds, and there is a pedestrian underpass beneath the highway that gets you to the Alamodome — on our Alamo Bowl trip, being able to walk in and out of the game that easily was a major benefit of the stay.
Service
Service was consistent and professional, which is what you expect from a Grand Hyatt of this size. The front desk handled my upgrade cleanly, and the Grand Club staff kept the breakfast and evening spreads well stocked even when the lounge was busy. Nothing felt impersonal despite the scale of the hotel.
I found the size never got in the way of a relaxed stay, and the club team in particular made the evenings feel like a genuine perk rather than an afterthought. For a big convention hotel, the service kept things running smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Grand Club at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio?
It is a private lounge offering complimentary breakfast, all-day snacks and beverages, and an evening spread of heavy hors d'oeuvres with free beer and wine. Access comes with a Club room, a suite, or Globalist status.
Does the Grand Club really serve free beer and wine?
Yes. During the evening cocktail hours the club offers complimentary beer and wine, including red, white, rose, and sparkling, alongside a hot item and appetizers. It is the standout feature of the hotel. What really won me over, as I say in the video, is that beer and wine are actually complimentary in the club — and there is a full cocktail menu the club attendants can mix for a reasonable price on top of that. I have not seen free beer and wine in a domestic club lounge in quite a while, and it stretches the value of an already cheap points stay even further.
Is the Grand Hyatt San Antonio a good points value?
I think it is one of the better domestic redemptions in World of Hyatt, especially during high-demand dates. Compare the points rate against cash to confirm it works for your trip.
Can I get a suite upgrade as a Globalist?
Yes, subject to availability. I was upgraded to a suite as a Globalist, and the hotel has a good number of suites, which helps your odds on quieter dates.
Is the hotel right on the River Walk?
Yes. It sits directly on the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, across from the Alamodome via a pedestrian bridge, and connected to the convention center.
Does the Grand Hyatt have a pool?
Yes, a heated outdoor rooftop pool that is open year-round, with panoramic downtown views and a sundeck. There is also a fitness center on site.
Bottom Line
The Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk is a case study in why hotel loyalty and points still pay off. The bones are those of a big convention hotel, but the River Walk location, the rooftop pool, and above all the Grand Club turn it into a stay I recommend without hesitation for Hyatt members. That free beer, wine, and evening food is a perk you actually feel.
Bring your World of Hyatt points and, if you have it, Globalist status, and this property gives you back real value. The same room that looks ordinary at cash rate transforms once you add club access, a suite upgrade, and points pricing on a busy weekend. Stack those benefits and a solid downtown hotel becomes one of the smartest stays in the city.
