Icon vs. Star vs. Legend vs. Hero of the Seas: Royal Caribbean's Icon Class Compared

Royal Caribbean's Icon class will have four ships by August 2027: Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, Legend of the Seas, and Hero of the Seas. They share the same eight-neighborhood layout, the Category 6 water park, and the Crown's Edge skywalk, so the choice between them comes down to three things: where the ship sails from, which Broadway show is in the Royal Theater, and the handful of venues that are unique to each ship.

My short answer is to pick the homeport and dates first, then use the show and the new venues as the tiebreaker. I book these ships for clients every week, and the most common mistake I see is paying a premium for the newest sister when an older one sails from a more convenient port for less. This guide lays out exactly what differs.

What Every Icon Class Ship Shares

Before getting into the differences, it helps to know how much is identical. Every Icon class ship is organized into eight neighborhoods, including Thrill Island with the Category 6 water park, which Royal Caribbean calls the largest at sea, Surfside for young families, the AquaDome with its AquaTheater shows, and Central Park. All four have Crown's Edge, the skywalk and zip line that hangs out over the ocean, plus Absolute Zero ice shows and the adults-only The Hideaway pool. Royal Caribbean lists 28 dining venues on both Legend and Hero.

The class runs on liquefied natural gas, and the ships carry about 5,600 guests at double occupancy. If you have read my Star of the Seas review, most of it applies to any sister. My Oasis class vs. Icon class post explains how the class compares with the ships that came before.

Icon of the Seas vs. Star of the Seas: Homeports and Itineraries

Homeport is the biggest practical difference, and it shifts in 2027.

Icon of the Seas starts 2027 in Miami and moves to Galveston in August 2027, where Royal Caribbean will sail her on 6- to 8-night Eastern and Western Caribbean trips calling at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Roatan, and Cozumel. That makes Icon the first Icon class ship with a Texas homeport, which is good news for anyone who would rather drive to Galveston than fly to Florida. My Galveston cruise parking guide is already useful for those sailings.

Star of the Seas sails seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries year-round from Port Canaveral. Central Florida families and anyone combining a cruise with Orlando should start with Star. My Port Canaveral embarkation guide covers the terminal.

Legend of the Seas vs. Hero of the Seas: Homeports and Itineraries

Legend of the Seas debuted in July 2026 with seven-night Western Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia), then moves to Fort Lauderdale in November 2026 for 6-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Southern Caribbean sailings, the longer ones calling at Aruba and Curacao. Every Legend Caribbean sailing includes Perfect Day at CocoCay. The 8-night Southern Caribbean option is unusual for the class, and it is the one I point people to if they want a longer trip without leaving Florida. My things to do in Aruba on a cruise guide pairs well with it.

Hero of the Seas arrives in Miami in August 2027 with seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings. Western routes call at Cozumel and Roatan; Eastern routes call at St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Every sailing visits Perfect Day at CocoCay. In practice, Hero takes over Icon's role in Miami just as Icon heads to Texas.

Pro Tip: On the Eastern and Western Caribbean routes, all four ships stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay. If the island is the priority, pick the ship by homeport and price, and read my Perfect Day at CocoCay guide before you book anything there.

Icon Class Theater Shows Compared

The headline Broadway show is the easiest way to tell the sisters apart, and families often choose on this alone.

  • Icon of the Seas: The Wizard of Oz, a classic that works for every age.
  • Star of the Seas: Back to the Future: The Musical, the pick for parents who grew up with the movies.
  • Legend of the Seas: Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a strong match for younger kids.
  • Hero of the Seas: The SpongeBob Musical, in an original at-sea adaptation of the Tony Award-winning show, staged in the Royal Theater. I covered the announcement in my SpongeBob Musical on Hero of the Seas post.

The AquaTheater and ice shows change by ship as well, but the Broadway title is the one Royal Caribbean builds its marketing around.

New Venues on Legend of the Seas and Hero of the Seas

Royal Caribbean uses each new sister to test fresh ideas, and Legend has the most changes so far. Royal Railway: Legend Station is a dining experience set inside a train car with a Silk Routes theme. Hollywoodland Supper Club brings a golden-age Hollywood dinner concept. The AquaDome Market food hall gets five new stands, Surfside's Playscape is redesigned, and a new carousel concept joins the neighborhood. Legend has seven pools and a Category 6 water park with six slides.

Royal Caribbean lists nine pools on Hero, including Coconut Cove and The Hideaway, plus the Ultimate Family Treehouse, a suite spanning three decks. The full list of Hero's dining changes has not been published in detail yet, so expect more announcements before she sails.

Icon Class Cabins and Suites

Stateroom categories are close to identical across the class: Surfside family cabins, Central Park and AquaDome balconies, Infinite Balconies, and the three-tier Royal Suite Class with Sea, Sky, and Star suites. The top family accommodation on Icon and Star is the Ultimate Family Townhouse; Hero introduces the Ultimate Family Treehouse. If a specific suite is driving your decision, I check the deck plans ship by ship, since a few layouts have shifted between sisters.

Icon of the Seas vs. Star of the Seas on Price

Fares change by sailing, but a pattern holds. The newest ship in a class usually costs more in its first year, and the older sisters become the better value once a newer one arrives. Port matters too: Port Canaveral and Miami sailings often price differently for the same week. My Royal Caribbean cruise cost guide breaks down what a week really costs. If you want me to price two sisters for the same week, send me your dates through my booking page.

Which Icon Class Ship To Book

Book Legend of the Seas if you want the newest venues now, a Fort Lauderdale departure, a Mediterranean sailing, or the 8-night Southern Caribbean route.

Book Hero of the Seas if you want the newest ship in Miami from August 2027 and have SpongeBob fans in the family.
