MSC Sandy Cay: What To Know About MSC’s New Private Island Opening in 2028
MSC Cruises is building a second private island in the Bahamas. Sandy Cay sits a few minutes by boat from Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, opens in 2028, and will take guests from both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, the group's luxury brand. MSC announced it on April 14, 2026 alongside a round of upgrades to Ocean Cay itself, and the renderings released since then show something very different from the mega-ship beach days the rest of the industry is building.
I have sailed to Ocean Cay several times and toured most of the MSC fleet for my YouTube channel, so this post covers what MSC has confirmed, what the renderings show, what is still unanswered, and how I would think about booking around it.

What MSC Has Confirmed About Sandy Cay
The hard facts are thin so far. Sandy Cay is a separate island, not an extension of Ocean Cay, built on a natural sandbank that MSC expanded using material dredged from the Ocean Cay ship channel and turning basin. That is where the name comes from. The sand is aragonite, the very fine, very white sand that makes Ocean Cay look the way it does in photos, and MSC has leaned on it in every piece of marketing.
The island is about a third the size of Ocean Cay. It opens in 2028. It serves MSC Cruises ships sailing from Miami and Port Canaveral, plus Explora Journeys, which has been calling at Ocean Cay on its Caribbean voyages since Explora I entered service.
Rubén Rodríguez, CEO of MSC Group's North American cruise division, described the island as bringing "a refined sense of comfort with a strong connection to nature," and said MSC expects "continued segmentation of experiences, with separate areas for families, adults-only guests, and more luxury-focused experiences." Read that second quote carefully, because it tells you what Sandy Cay is for. Ocean Cay is getting bigger and busier. Sandy Cay is where MSC will send the guests paying the most.
What the Sandy Cay Renderings Show
The aerial rendering is the useful one. The island is shaped like a starfish, with five sheltered coves cut into the shoreline, each one ringed by rock breakwaters that turn the cove into a calm, shallow lagoon. Every cove has its own beach. There is no pier for a cruise ship, which confirms that guests will arrive by boat from Ocean Cay, where the pier is being extended to hold two ships at once.
The buildings are low and thatched. I count a large round pavilion near the center of the island, which is almost certainly the main restaurant, several long low-rise structures with what look like lap pools beside them, and a cluster of smaller thatched roofs along the beaches that read as cabanas or villas. The service area with the solar array sits on the far side of the island, away from the beaches, which is the same approach MSC took on Ocean Cay.
The closer renderings show a beach bar and dining pavilion set back from the sand, loungers arranged in loose rows rather than packed in, and a stone jetty with a wooden deck at the end for swimming and paddleboards. The people in the renderings are spread thin. That is the whole pitch. MSC is showing you empty sand.
Nothing in these images is final. MSC has not published a facility list, a dining plan, a cabana count, or a capacity figure, and renderings from two years out change. Treat them as a statement of intent.
What MSC Has Not Answered About Sandy Cay
Who actually gets to go. This is the question that decides whether Sandy Cay matters to you. Rodríguez's comment about segmentation and the phrase "more luxury-focused" point toward some form of restricted access. The likely candidates are MSC Yacht Club guests, Explora Journeys guests, and a paid day pass for everyone else, in some combination. MSC has not said which. Until it does, do not book a 2028 MSC cruise on the assumption that Sandy Cay is included in your fare.
How the transfer works. A few minutes by boat from Ocean Cay is all MSC has said. Whether that is a tender from the ship, a ferry from the Ocean Cay pier, or a scheduled shuttle with limited capacity, we do not know. On an island a third the size of Ocean Cay, the transfer is going to be the bottleneck.
Food and drink. Lunch on Ocean Cay is included and drink packages work at every bar on the island. MSC has not confirmed either for Sandy Cay. Given the luxury positioning, I would expect a different arrangement. My guide to what is included on an MSC cruise covers how MSC handles extras today.
Which ships. Miami and Port Canaveral sailings is a wide net. MSC's largest ships, MSC World America and the Seaside EVO class, are the ones that call at Ocean Cay most often, and my MSC ships by size guide breaks down which class sails from where.
Ocean Cay Upgrades Coming by 2027
The Sandy Cay announcement came packaged with a set of changes to Ocean Cay that will land before the new island does, most of them scheduled for late 2027.
The pier is being extended so two ships can dock at the same time. Today Ocean Cay handles one ship alongside, which has limited how MSC schedules the island. Two ships means more calls, and it means the island will be busier on the days both are in.
Four new dining venues take the island from three restaurants to seven. A new adults-only beach called Paradise Sands is coming, along with a family lagoon, more cabanas, and expanded food markets. The family zone at Seakers Cove gets a playground, a splash pad and a ropes course. MSC is also adding a marine conservation experience tied to the MSC Foundation's coral restoration work, which has been running on the island since it opened in December 2019.
Put the two announcements together and the strategy is clear. Ocean Cay becomes the high-volume island with a two-ship pier, seven restaurants and a kids' area, and Sandy Cay absorbs the guests who want none of that.

How Sandy Cay Compares to Other Cruise Line Private Islands
Every major line is spending on beach property right now, and almost all of it is going the opposite direction from Sandy Cay.
Carnival's Celebration Key on Grand Bahama has four berths and can land more than 13,000 passengers in a day. Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay is built around a waterpark and a two-ship pier, and its ticketed Royal Beach Club in Nassau holds about 4,000 guests. Norwegian put $150 million into a pier and a waterpark at Great Stirrup Cay. The closest comparison is Royal Caribbean's Coco Beach Club and the Hideaway Beach adults area at CocoCay, both of which are paid add-ons layered onto a free island. Sandy Cay looks like MSC's version of that idea, moved to its own island so the separation is physical rather than a fence and a wristband.
MSC's other recent beach project, Catalina Sugar Beach in the Dominican Republic, opens in November 2026 and is a joint venture on a shared island. Sandy Cay is the opposite: fully owned, fully controlled, and built from scratch.
Should You Wait for Sandy Cay to Book an MSC Cruise?
No. 2028 is a long way out, the access model is unannounced, and a first-season private island always opens with missing pieces. Ocean Cay is already one of the best private islands in the Caribbean, and the 2027 upgrades make it better before Sandy Cay adds anything. Five Tips I Give Every Client About MSC Private Islands
1. Book the Ocean Cay day into your cabin choice. Which side of the ship faces the island at the Ocean Cay pier depends on the ship and the call. Ask me to check before you pick a side, because a balcony facing the lagoon at sunset is the best seat on the island day.
2. Yacht Club guests already get their own space on Ocean Cay. Ocean House is a private restaurant and beach area for Yacht Club guests today. Sandy Cay is likely an expansion of that idea, so if you are deciding between Yacht Club and a standard balcony, the island access is part of the math.

4. Do not expect Sandy Cay details until 2027. MSC announced Ocean Cay years before it opened and the full facility list, dining plan and pricing came in the final stretch before the first call. Expect the same here.
