Thompson Dallas Review: The Most Luxurious Hotel Downtown

BOTTOM LINE
The Thompson Dallas is the most polished hotel in downtown Dallas, set inside the restored National tower with curated art around nearly every corner. I stayed as a World of Hyatt Globalist and loved the design, the rooms, and Monarch up on the 49th floor. My one hesitation is pricing, which has felt a touch high for the area on both points and cash, so run the numbers for your dates before you book.
Every so often a hotel makes you slow down in the lobby just to look around, and the Thompson Dallas is one of them. It occupies The National, the reborn old Republic Bank building, and the developers poured serious money into art and design throughout. As a Globalist, I was excited to try it, and the physical property lived up to the reputation.
What I want to give you here is a balanced review, because I think this is a beautiful hotel that also asks a lot for its rates. This is a Thompson property, now part of World of Hyatt, so you can bring Hyatt points and status to a hotel that feels this upscale. I will cover the art and design, the rooms, Monarch, and how the booking math shakes out.
Booking the Thompson Dallas
The Thompson Dallas is a World of Hyatt property, so you can book it with points, cash, or a mix, and apply your Hyatt status. That flexibility is a plus, and Globalist perks make it more attractive if you carry that status. On the right dates, a points redemption can soften the cost nicely.
Here is my honest hesitation: the pricing, on both points and cash, has felt a bit high for the Dallas market to me. Downtown Dallas is not a market that commands top-tier resort pricing, so I want you to run the numbers before you commit. When the points rate lines up well against a high cash rate, that is your green light. If cash is cheap and points value looks thin, you might pay cash and save your points for a market where they go further.
Best cards for booking
To get the most from a stay here, the cards I would reach for are the World of Hyatt Credit Card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Location
The Thompson sits in the heart of downtown Dallas inside The National, formerly the Republic Bank building, which went through a massive restoration to become the hotel plus residences. It is a striking mid-century tower, and staying inside a restored landmark gives the whole experience a sense of place. You are downtown, within reach of the arts district, dining, and the business core.
Downtown Dallas is more of a business and events hub than a walkable tourist zone, so plan on rideshares to reach many attractions. That is worth knowing before you book, because part of the value of a downtown hotel depends on what you plan to do nearby. For a business trip or a design-focused city stay, the location works well.
Lobby and Check-In
The art here is not an afterthought, it is a defining feature. The property showcases a serious collection of curated pieces and one-of-a-kind furnishings sourced from major galleries and design fairs, and you notice it the moment you walk in. The reception and public spaces feel more like a gallery than a hotel lobby.
The design team leaned into a mid-century modern sensibility that matches the building's roots, with rich materials, imaginative lighting, and plenty of intimate lounge nooks. Check-in as a Globalist was smooth, and it is the kind of hotel where wandering the common areas is part of the fun. If you appreciate design, this alone may sell you on a stay.
The Room
The hotel has just over 200 guest rooms, including a set of suites with skyline views and the same mid-century modern flair that runs through the building. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed, with quality finishes that match the high-design public spaces. It feels like a real luxury property rather than a themed one. Our suite made the case on its own: one and a half baths (that little guest bathroom is always a treat), a sitting nook and a dining room each with a dedicated TV — three screens in total — a huge walk-in closet with slippers, a steamer, and even free shoe-shine service. The minibar stocked seriously expensive bottles (Clase Azul in a hotel room is a first for me), but Globalist waters were free and the espresso machine was included, and the doorless rainfall shower actually stayed warm and steamy — my usual European-shower complaint didn’t apply.
I stayed as a World of Hyatt Globalist, which is one of the nicer things about the Thompson being part of the Hyatt family: you can bring your Hyatt status and points to a hotel that feels this upscale. The elite benefits carry over, and it is a treat to use them at a property with this level of design. My Globalist status delivered here: a very nice suite upgrade, plus the rare option to take the free breakfast as room service instead of at the fifth-floor restaurant — a lifesaver traveling with our young son Roman. Two caveats from that breakfast, though: you order through a menu on the television and they were out of several items, and the credit here is strict — unlike many Hyatts that quietly wipe a small overage, this hotel charges you for every dollar past the limit.
Suite availability drives upgrade potential, as always, so it is worth asking at check-in. If you can land one of the skyline-view suites, the mix of design and city views is hard to beat downtown. The gym is one of the most impressive hotel setups I’ve experienced — all brand-new Technogym equipment including specialized pieces like a tire-flip machine I’ve never seen in a hotel, plus an outdoor yoga lawn perched above the street noise. The pool runs lap-style with a see-through acrylic wall for gawking, and from my suite I could see a hot tub below practically mocking me all morning.
Pools and Amenities
Beyond the headline restaurant, the Thompson offers the amenity set you expect from a modern luxury hotel, wrapped in the same design language that defines the public spaces. Pool and fitness facilities, curated lounge areas, and thoughtful service round out the stay. Confirm current pool hours and any seasonal access directly with the hotel when you book, since city hotels adjust these.
The downtown Dallas setting is more corporate than touristy, which shapes how you use the hotel. In the evenings, the on-site dining and the design of the property give you plenty of reason to stay in and enjoy the space. For daytime exploring, you will likely rideshare to the arts district, museums, or other neighborhoods.
Food and Drink
Monarch is the headliner, a wood-fired modern Italian restaurant perched on the 49th floor with sweeping views across Dallas. It comes from a well-regarded culinary team and focuses on handmade pastas, steaks, and fresh seafood in a polished, dress-up setting. The room and the view make it a destination in its own right, not just a hotel restaurant.
Dining up there is a real occasion, and it is one of the main reasons people seek out this hotel even if they are not staying overnight. There are additional food and beverage outlets within the property as well, giving you options beyond the flagship. If you book the Thompson, I would make a Monarch reservation part of the plan.
Because downtown Dallas is more corporate than touristy, the on-site dining does a lot of work for a stay here. In the evenings, having a destination restaurant and a handsome bar under the same roof means you do not have to rideshare somewhere just to eat well. That is part of what makes the hotel feel self-contained in a way that suits a business trip or a quiet couple's weekend.
Service
Service matched the design polish during my stay, attentive and professional without being stiff. As a Globalist, my status was recognized and the benefits applied cleanly, which is not always a given at a design-led property.
The staff seemed proud of the building and its art, and that came through in how they handled requests and recommendations. It is the kind of service that makes an already handsome hotel feel like a real luxury stay.
It is worth pricing the Thompson against a comparable design or luxury hotel in a more expensive city too. Viewed that way, a strong points night here can feel like a bargain for the experience you get. The trick is simply matching your redemption to the right dates rather than booking on autopilot, and for a special occasion the payoff is easy to justify.

Where is the Thompson Dallas located?
It is in downtown Dallas inside The National, the restored former Republic Bank building. The tower also houses residences alongside the hotel. Hotel guests share the elevators and amenities with the condo owners upstairs — perks include a ninth-floor dog walk alongside Catbird and the spa — and the building’s history shines on the fifth floor, where the old bank lobby has been converted into a gorgeous event space hosting weddings and corporate gatherings. The whole $400 million restoration of what was once the tallest building west of the Mississippi genuinely shows.

It depends on your priorities. The design and Monarch justify it for a special stay, but I have found the pricing a bit high for the Dallas market, so run the numbers first.

Bottom Line
The Thompson Dallas is the rare downtown hotel that feels like a destination in itself. The restored National building, the serious art collection, and Monarch high above the city combine into something memorable, and as a Globalist I enjoyed every part of the physical stay. It is, without question, the most luxurious place to sleep downtown.
My only reservation is the price, which can ask more than the Dallas market usually supports. Weigh the design premium against your budget, lean on Hyatt points and status if you have them, and go in with clear eyes. Do that, and the Thompson can be a standout stay for a special occasion or a design lover's trip.
