Miami has a lot of hotels, but very few are actual resorts where you can happily park for a few days and never leave. The JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa is the exception, and it is the property I recommend when a family wants one place that does everything. It sits in Aventura on a sprawling campus, and the centerpiece is Tidal Cove, which I would put up against any resort waterpark in the country.

That central spot makes it one of the better pre-cruise or post-cruise bases, since both PortMiami and Port Everglades are an easy transfer away.
Aventura itself is convenient without being touristy. The Aventura Mall, one of the largest in the country, is right nearby, and the beaches at Sunny Isles and Hollywood are a short drive. You get resort seclusion on the property with real-world amenities just outside the gates. You are a few surface streets off I-95, very close to the Aventura Brightline station and Aventura Mall, and the arrival itself sells the place: a grand port cochere flanked by huge waterfall fountains whose white noise makes you feel instantly on vacation. Keep an eye out for the herb garden too; the restaurants actually use what grows there.
Lobby and Check-In
The property covers a large campus, several hundred acres, so it does not feel cramped the way a lot of city hotels do. The lobby reads as a proper resort arrival, and there is a shuttle and plenty of golf-cart movement around the grounds, which you will appreciate when you are ferrying kids and pool bags between buildings.
First-timers are often surprised by the scale, and it is worth walking or riding around on day one to get your bearings. Check-in is smooth, and as an elite member I always confirm upgrade potential and any club access at the desk.
The Room
The guest rooms were refreshed as part of the resort's major renovation, and they read modern and bright with a clean coastal feel. My standard king was comfortable and well sized, with a balcony or window looking out over the golf courses and grounds. Categories run from standard rooms up through higher floors, club-level access, and suites for families who want more space.
As a Marriott Bonvoy elite member, I keep an eye on upgrade potential and lounge access here, both of which can improve the stay depending on status and availability. If you are traveling with kids, ask about the larger room types or a suite, because you will appreciate the extra room after full days at the waterpark. This is a big property, so request a room location that suits your plans when you book. Our suite was lovely with one nitpick: the sliding closet is too small to fit full-size suitcases, which matters when most guests are hauling big bags all the way to Florida. The bathroom made up for it with a full shower and bath, a rainfall fixture, the JW-standard aromatherapy bath items, nice tile floors, and real washcloths; JW Marriott is probably my favorite of the Marriott brands for exactly this kind of consistent quality.

Tidal Cove is the reason most families choose this resort, and it delivers. The park is built around a 60-foot tower with five waterslides, including the Aqua Drop, Boomerango, Constrictor, Whizzard, and Master Blaster, plus a lazy river that winds through the grounds. There is a large Laguna Pool, a dedicated Kids Cove with a playscape and thousands of square feet of shallow water, and even a FlowRider stationary surf machine.
What makes it work is that admission is included in your resort stay, so you are not paying a separate day-pass on top of the room. There are private cabanas at the Oasis Pool if you want a home base for the day, and casual food is right there so nobody has to trek back to the room for lunch. I have seen kids happily burn an entire day here. Tidal Cove really is a true water park, not just a slide tower bolted onto a hotel the way many properties do it. The slides were not open yet the morning we had to leave for our cruise check-in, but the lazy river (always my favorite part of any water park), the hot tub, the full bar and restaurant, and the sea of chairs make it easy to settle in for a day. Cabanas rent for extra; I did not get exact pricing, but figure the 500 dollar and up range that is the going rate these days.
Beyond the water, the Turnberry has real resort bones. There are two 18-hole championship golf courses, the Soffer Course and the Miller Course, which is a rarity for a Miami-area hotel, and guests under 15 can play free with a paying adult in the afternoons. For a break from the slides, the ame Spa and Wellness Collective runs from standard massages and scrubs to holistic options like lymphatic drainage and a Himalayan salt room.
Food and Drink
Dining here is better than you might expect from a big family resort. The headliner is Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina, a polished steakhouse with prime cuts, local seafood, and a deep wine list, and it is the spot for a nicer dinner without leaving the property. For everyday meals there is Corsair Kitchen and Bar, which covers breakfast and casual dining well. Corsair has a nice view of the golf course out the back of its tower, and the full buffet is typically what you receive as a Platinum member or above; traveling with a one-year-old, we opted for to-go breakfast instead, and the quality was great, though food and drink prices across the property run high, which is standard for Miami.
Down at the waterpark, Surf House is the poolside grill for lunch and snacks, and Freestyle inside Tidal Cove leans kid-friendly with pizzas, chicken fingers, and burgers. Having real food options right at the pool is one of those small things that makes a family day run smoothly. You can eat well across the price spectrum here, from a steakhouse night to a poolside burger.
Service
On a property this large, service can make or break the stay, and the Turnberry generally gets it right. Staff at the waterpark and pools kept things moving on the busy days I visited, and the front desk handled requests without a hassle. As an elite member I found recognition consistent.
The scale means you occasionally wait a beat longer at peak times, but the team clearly knows how to run a family resort at volume. For the kind of trip this hotel is built for, that reliability matters.
