Great Stirrup Cay Guide: What To Know About Norwegian's Private Island
Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in the Bahamas, and in the last twelve months it has changed more than in the previous decade. A pier opened in December 2025, a 1.4-acre pool called Great Life Lagoon opened the same month, an adults-only beach club arrived, and the Great Tides Waterpark opened on September 4, 2026. The island now has a free day and a paid day, and the gap between the two is wider than it used to be.
This guide covers what is included with your cruise fare, what costs extra, and how I would plan the day depending on who is traveling. Prices below are what Norwegian lists as of October 2026, and most of them move by sailing date, so treat them as a starting range and check your own booking in myNCL.

Getting Ashore at Great Stirrup Cay: The New Pier
For years, Great Stirrup Cay was a tender port, and that was its biggest weakness. When the wind picked up, tenders stopped and ships skipped the island entirely. Norwegian opened its new pier on December 28, 2025, with Norwegian Getaway as the first ship to tie up. You now walk off the ship and onto the island, and a new Welcome Center and tram system move people from the pier to the beaches.
Industry reports say the pier closed for several months in 2026 while Norwegian added a second berth, with guests tendering during that work, and that it reopened in late summer with two ships able to dock at once. More double-call days are reported on the schedule through the end of 2026, so expect some island days with two full ships ashore.
Pro Tip: On a double-call day, the free areas will be busier, and the paid areas will sell out sooner. If your cruise lands on one of those dates, book the waterpark or a cabana as soon as your myNCL account opens up purchases.
What Is Included at Great Stirrup Cay
Your cruise fare covers a lot more ashore than it did a few years ago. Norwegian describes the island as having numerous complimentary dining options, and the beaches, loungers in the general areas, and the tram cost nothing.
The headline free upgrade is Great Life Lagoon, a heated 1.4-acre pool that Norwegian says is larger than two Olympic pools combined. It has a beach-style entry, splash features, and two swim-up bars, the Reef Bar with a DJ and the Waves Bar. Cabanas surround the pool for anyone who wants shade and a reserved spot.
Families get Splash Harbor, a complimentary kids splash pad. Norwegian also lists Horizon Park with lawn games and pickleball courts, and Hammock Bay with more than 50 hammocks. If your plan is a beach chair, a pool, a buffet lunch, and a nap in a hammock, you can spend the whole day without opening your wallet. My Norwegian what's included guide covers the onboard side of the fare in the same detail.
Great Tides Waterpark at Great Stirrup Cay
The newest addition is the Great Tides Waterpark, which opened on September 4, 2026, during a seven-night Norwegian Luna sailing. It covers nearly six acres and has 19 slides in four zones: Tidal Tower, Cliffside Cove, Wandering River, and Splash Cay.
- Tidal Tower stands 170 feet tall and holds eight slides, including the Breakwater Blasters water coasters, Whitewater Dash, Rapid Mat Racers, Tropic Storm, and Tropic Spiral.
- Cliffside Cove has cliff jumps, which Norwegian calls the industry's first and highest, plus Fearless Falls racing slides and The Great Slide, a four-person body slide.
- Wandering River is a nearly 800-foot moving river.
- Splash Cay is a 9,000-square-foot kids zone with eight of the 19 slides sized for younger children.
Admission is separate from your cruise fare. Norwegian's excursion listing listed $89.99 per person for all ages as of October 2026, and the line says pricing varies with season and availability, so you may see a higher number on busy dates. Kids 0 to 3 are free, and anyone 17 or under needs a ticketed adult with them. Slide height minimums run from 36 to 48 inches.
The pass includes lounge chairs, umbrellas, towels, lockers, tram service, and complimentary dining inside the park. Drinks are included only if you have Norwegian's Free at Sea beverage package. Free at Sea shore excursion credits cannot be used for admission, which catches people off guard. Waterpark cabanas hold up to six guests and include admission for the group.
Pro Tip: Run the math on a waterpark cabana for a family of five or six. Once you add up six individual passes, the cabana price can land closer to the per-person cost than you would expect, and you get shade near Tidal Tower.
Vibe Shore Club and Silver Cove at Great Stirrup Cay
Vibe Shore Club is the adults-only beach club, open to guests 18 and older. Norwegian lists the day pass at $109.99 per person as of October 2026, and capacity is limited. Premium loungers, a private bar, and premium cocktails are part of the experience, and Norwegian notes the shore excursion discount does not apply. Couples cabanas for two and premium cabanas for up to four adults are sold separately.
Silver Cove is the upscale corner of the island, with its own buffet and spa. An Ocean Villa for up to six guests was listed at $599 per villa as of October 2026. It includes air conditioning, a TV, a private restroom, a retractable glass wall, beach loungers with an umbrella, a bottle of sparkling wine, a fruit basket, snacks, bar service, and access to the Silver Cove buffet. The spa costs extra.
I tell my clients to think about it this way: a villa split six ways costs about the same per person as the Vibe Shore Club pass, and you get a private room with a bathroom and air conditioning. For a group of adults, that is usually the better deal.
Food and Drinks at Great Stirrup Cay
Lunch ashore is included, and Norwegian has added food trucks around the newer areas. Vibe Shore Club and Silver Cove each have their own dining for guests who paid for those areas.
Drinks were a moving target in 2026. Norwegian announced late in 2025 that its standard drink package would stop working on the island starting March 1, 2026, and then reversed course before the change took effect. Norwegian's own FAQ now says the Free at Sea open bar package applies to the entire island. My Norwegian drink package guide breaks down what each tier covers and when the upgrade is worth paying for.
Great Stirrup Cay Excursions and Paid Activities
Beyond the waterpark and the beach clubs, Norwegian sells island activities through myNCL, with the menu changing as construction finishes. Expect water sports, snorkeling, and cabana rentals around Great Life Lagoon. Book the popular items before you sail, because the island has a fixed number of each and they sell through the cruise line only.
Many Great Stirrup Cay itineraries also stop in Nassau. If yours does, my guide to things to do in Nassau on a cruise covers the walkable options, and you can book this on Viator if you want a beach transfer or snorkel trip there. The Nassau cruise port guide has the terminal layout.
How I Would Plan a Day at Great Stirrup Cay
For families with kids who can clear 48 inches, I would buy the waterpark pass, get off the ship early, and do Tidal Tower before the second wave of passengers arrives. For families with toddlers, Splash Harbor and Great Life Lagoon cover the day for free, and I would skip the waterpark unless older siblings are along.
For couples, I would pick between Vibe Shore Club and a shared Silver Cove villa based on group size. For two people, Vibe is the simpler buy. For four to six adults, the villa wins. For anyone who wants a quiet beach and nothing else, the free day covers it. When I book a Norwegian cruise for a client, I add the island purchases to the plan up front so the waterpark or villa is reserved before the sailing fills.
If you are comparing Norwegian with other lines partly on the island, my Carnival vs. Norwegian comparison and the Perfect Day at CocoCay guide show how the paid-versus-free split works elsewhere. My ranking of the best cruise line private islands puts all of them side by side.
