Ocean Cay Guide: Everything To Do on MSC's Private Island
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas, and it is the easiest private island day to recommend for people who want beach time without a list of paid add-ons. Ships dock at a pier, all eight beaches are included, lunch is included across several food courts and food trucks, and the island stays open into the evening on select sailings for a lighthouse show you will not find at any other line's island.
The paid upgrades are mostly cabanas, water sports, and the private beach that comes with MSC Yacht Club. This guide covers what is included with your fare, what costs extra, how the drink packages work ashore, and what MSC has announced for the island's next phase.

Ocean Cay History and Layout
Ocean Cay is a man-made island. It was built up for sand mining decades ago and sat abandoned for years before MSC took it on under a long-term lease from the Bahamian government in the mid-2010s. MSC cleared out the industrial equipment and rebuilt it as a marine reserve. The whole island is small, which is why it is easy to cover on foot.
MSC built the conservation angle into the name. The Marine Conservation Center on the island runs coral restoration work, including a program growing heat-resistant coral, with partners such as the University of The Bahamas, Nova Southeastern University, and the University of Miami. The surrounding waters carry a Hope Spot designation from Mission Blue. Guests can visit the center and meet the team as part of the included day.
The Eight Beaches at Ocean Cay
MSC lists eight beaches, and seven are open to everyone:
- Lighthouse Bay Beach, beside the lighthouse and the evening party area
- Bimini Beach, one of the three beaches with cabanas
- North Beach, also with cabanas
- South Beach, the third cabana beach
- Sunset Beach
- Seaker's Cove, a shallow lagoon that MSC points families toward
- Paradise Sands
- Ocean House Beach, reserved for MSC Yacht Club guests
Every beach has lifeguards. With eight beaches on an island this size, crowds spread out better than on islands where everyone heads to one stretch of sand.
Pro Tip: Families with small children should head straight to Seaker's Cove. The shallow lagoon is calmer than the open beaches, and it is the area MSC sets up for younger kids.
What Is Included at Ocean Cay
Most of the day costs nothing extra. Beach access, loungers in the public areas, yoga classes, volleyball, soccer, and tennis are all part of the fare, and so are the kids' activities: a LEGO pop-up experience with character dance parties, an augmented reality treasure hunt, and sandbox play.
Food is included at Seakers Food Court, Boho Food Court, six Beach Shack food trucks, and The Smiling Fish for soft-serve and coffee. My MSC what's included guide covers how the onboard side of the fare compares.
Drinks and MSC Drink Packages at Ocean Cay
The island has 12 bars, including the Lighthouse Bar and Springer's Bar. MSC states that its Premium Extra drink package is valid on the island across all 12 bars, so if you bought that package for your cruise, it works ashore. If you are on a lower tier, confirm coverage before you sail, because MSC's island page only names Premium Extra. My MSC drink package guide explains the tiers and when upgrading makes sense.
Ocean Cay Lighthouse Show and Late Stays
The lighthouse is the island's landmark. During the day you can climb it for views across the island and the reserve. At night, it hosts what MSC calls the only LED lighthouse show in the Bahamas, with music and a dance party on Lighthouse Bay.
The night program only happens on itineraries with a late stay or an overnight at Ocean Cay. Those sailings add LED-lit paddleboards and kayaks, stargazing, and the Luna Libre beach party. When I compare MSC Bahamas sailings for my clients, the late stay is one of the first things I look for in the itinerary, because it turns the island into a highlight of the week. The best time to cruise the Bahamas also affects how comfortable an evening on the beach will be.
Ocean Cay Cabanas and Paid Upgrades
MSC has 37 cabanas spread across North Beach, South Beach, and Bimini Beach. They come with comfortable seating, drinks, snacks, and floating mats. MSC sells cabanas through its shore excursion system with prices that vary by sailing and demand, so I check the rate for each booking rather than quoting one number.
Paid activities include WaveRunner rides, lighthouse experiences, and other water sports. Book these in advance through MSC, since the island's equipment is limited and there are no outside vendors.
Pro Tip: Cabanas cover drinks inside the cabana, so a group without drink packages can treat the cabana as their bar for the day. Compare that against the per-day cost of drink packages for everyone in the group before buying both.
MSC Yacht Club at Ocean Cay: Ocean House Beach
Guests staying in the MSC Yacht Club, the line's ship-within-a-ship suite area, get their own beach. Ocean House Beach comes with dedicated transportation, the Ocean House Restaurant for lunch, and Yacht Club cabanas with ocean views, lunch, drinks, and floating mats. If you are weighing a Yacht Club suite, the private beach at Ocean Cay is one of the clearer perks you get for the money.
Ocean Cay Updates MSC Has Announced
MSC has announced a new playground, a splash pad, four new dining venues, and an adults-only beach club for Ocean Cay, with the line pointing to the winter 2027 to 2028 season. MSC is also building a second private destination, an exclusive island called Sandy Cay, on the same timeline. My MSC Sandy Cay post covers that project, and it sits alongside the line's other beach destinations in my MSC coverage.
Planning an Ocean Cay Cruise From Miami or Port Canaveral
MSC sails to Ocean Cay from Miami and Port Canaveral on three- to seven-night itineraries. Short sailings often pair the island with Nassau. If yours does, you can book this on Viator for beach transfers or snorkel trips in Nassau, and my things to do in Nassau post covers what you can do on foot.
If you are driving to the port, my Miami cruise parking guide and Port Canaveral embarkation guide cover the logistics. To estimate the full trip, see the MSC cruise cost breakdown.
